Mission Oaxaca

Mission Oaxaca Mission Oaxaca began as a family outreach that helped us introduce young people to the people of Southern Mexico where poverty afflicts many. You choose.

As a former Medical Teams, International staff person, my heart was broken for Oaxaca in the early 90's by witnessing squalid living conditions and dire financial poverty. Paired with political corruption, many people in Oaxaca had no voice and are left without the most basic essentials such as proper nutrition, adequate and clean water, and access to medicine. After leaving MTI in the mid-90's we formed a volunteer group that worked in both Juchitan and Oaxaca, Oaxaca. Our work is very straightforward. Address the needs of the people. Work with their community leaders in identifying solutions. Mobilize people and businesses who share our conviction. In a short period of time, we poured "pisos" (cement slabs in homes), built a woman's shelter, built an eco-latrine, and helped provide the basic essentials for a children's home. In addition, we introduced dozens of young and older people alike to the plight of the Mexican with the idea that we can help them there or help them here. We return to Oaxaca to pick this work up in Espinal and Juchitan with Casa Isabel and Casa Angeles to uphold the commitment of these courageous leaders who are helping young women expand their choices though education. You're invited.

Wonderfully renewing week with our friends at CDC. I'm ever-grateful for the reminders of what matters most in our relationships and how grace and service to others continue to give us hope for the years to come.

Gracias a la Vaquera, Aurora, Lucy, y el resto de mi familia Oaxaqueña. Todos ustedes va a casa con nosotros en nuestros corazones.

Our day at Casa Angeles ended with a completed roof over the laundry and walkway areas to keep the clothes and ladies out of sometimes torrential rain. The new appliances were delivered right on time to replace a broken stove and a breaking fridge. Other good news is that Adela thinks they can second hand the former in the market and buy a new washer. But I like threes and thanks to some fantastically generous friends, will hand her the funds to buy a washer tonight. Thanks to YOU who gave. ;)

Day 2 brought immense progress and partly due to some local masons setting the stones while the wrecking crew excavated the larger patio and driveway. Logistics evolved to improve our plan, including building a steel framed awning at Casa Angeles by using budget to hire locals. (See picture inside). Overall, going swimmingly well.

Estoy muy feliz.
