How many times do we use “but” when we apologize? Have you noticed that?

Often parents think that they apologise to their children but they do the “I’m sorry, but”. When we add the “but” we contradict the apology. The “but” means that we were justified in our behaviour. “I’m sorry I yelled, but you wouldn’t hurry up and we were late”. That isn’t an apology it is a justification. Now I am in no way wanting to make parents feeling guilty. We have all yelled when we are stressed, that is reality, we are human and we make mistakes. However, this is all the more reason to explain our part in the problem.

Important reminder!

Thank you The Therapist Parent for this reminder.

"There is so much more to behaviour than most people think. Children don’t try to upset us, there is usually something behind it. They are communicating their need through behaviour. If we look behind the behaviour we can see a child who is doing the best they can."

“There are no facts, only interpretations.”
~ Friedrich Nietzsche

In a relationship, we have to remember that there are always two sides to the same story, so we need to learn to listen to how the other person sees the same situation.
