You’ve heard of constipation, but what is refractory constipation?

Many people aren’t familiar with the lesser-known condition.

While constipation is infrequent or hard-to-pass bowel movements, refractory, or hard-to-treat constipation, is ongoing trouble with bowel movements, even after trying lifestyle changes, diet, medications, and other therapies.

The most common chronic liver disease worldwide, metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) affects approximately 30% to 40% of the general adult population, including approximately 60% to 70% of individuals with type 2 and approximately 70% to 80% of those with .

The presence of MASLD is associated with increased morbidity and mortality due to liver-related complications, hepatocellular carcinoma, cardiovascular disease, and certain extrahepatic cancers.

This Review summarizes the pathogenesis, epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of MASLD.

Diverticulitis involves inflammation of outpouchings of the intestinal wall, a condition known as diverticulosis.

By age 60 years, nearly 60% of people have diverticulosis, most often on the left side of the colon. Acute diverticulitis affects about 180 per 100 000 people in the US each year, resulting in approximately 200 000 hospitalizations annually.
