Why Respiratory Rate Matters

Respiratory rate is often called the "forgotten vital sign," yet it's one of the most sensitive indicators of physiological changes. Unlike heart rate or blood pressure, respiratory rate responds quickly to:

Pathological conditions - Often changes before other vital signs

Emotional states - Stress, anxiety, and cognitive load

Environmental factors - Temperature, altitude, air quality

Physical demands - Exercise, fatigue, recovery

This sensitivity makes respiratory rate monitoring crucial across healthcare, occupational safety, and sports performance.

🦠 Pneumonia
Respiratory rate typically increases to 20-30 BPM as the body compensates for reduced oxygen exchange in infected lung tissue.

💓 Cardiac Events
Heart failure or cardiac stress often causes breathing rates of 22-35 BPM as the body struggles with reduced circulation.

🧠 Emotional Stress
Anxiety and stress can elevate breathing to 18-25 BPM, often the first measurable sign of psychological distress.

🏃 Physical Exercise
