🌟🌟🌟 Managing Challenging Behaviors: Parents just want a Peaceful Home! 🌟🌟🌟

Parenting is wild. There's no other way to put it.

🔍 What are challenging behaviors in children? Challenging behaviors disrupt family relationships and actually prevent a child's development. From temper tantrums to defiance, and aggression to difficulties with emotional regulation, these behaviors can test the patience of parents. 🙇‍♀️❌

🚫 We all make mistakes: inconsistent discipline, relying on punishments (Asian parents love this!) rather than positive reinforcement, and not finding the root cause of the behavior. Empathy, patience, and understanding are key when approaching these behaviors. 🙏❤️

🔑 Key to managing challenging behaviors: 1️⃣ Positive Reinforcement: Shower your child with praise and rewards for behaviors you want to see, motivating them to repeat them. 🌟🏆 2️⃣ Consistent Boundaries and Expectations: Establish clear rules and expectations, and then stick to them firmly. 📏✅ 3️⃣ Open Communication: Build an environment of open conversations, talking to understand your child's views and feelings. 🗣️💬 4️⃣ Emotional Regulation Techniques: Role-play how you deal with your anger so that your child can learn coping mechanisms to manage their emotions and challenging situations. 🧘‍♂️🌪️ 5️⃣ Parental Self-Care: Parents need self-care too, as your well-being directly impacts your ability to support your child. 🌸💪

✨💬 Let's connect and learn from each other! Share your experiences in the comments below. Have you faced challenging behaviors with your child? What strategies have worked for you? 💬✨

If you find yourself seeking additional guidance or support in managing challenging behaviors, consider making an appointment with a clinical psychologist specializing in neurodevelopmental, emotional, and behavioral issues in children. 💙🗓️ Reach out to Sunway Medical Centre to schedule your appointment! 📞✨

Remember, as parents, we have the power to shape our children's futures. Together, let's create a nurturing environment where love and growth abound! 🌟💕

“How will I give the most value to the audience?“ 💛

🎙️Giving a talk is scary. Giving a talk to a large number of people is scarier. And when the venue is Garden Residences & Hotel, hosted by the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA), means the fear is real!

I was invited to represent the Malaysian Society of Clinical Psychology in MMA‘s recent Career Guidance Fair to talk about “The Joys and Challenges of being a Clinical Psychologist”. Knowing the potential impact of this event, I chose to restructure my thoughts 💭 instead of dwelling on the fear 🥶.

“What can I do to help the audience understand my job?”
“How can I represent clinical psychologists?”
“What would a 17-year-old student find interesting about this career?“

When I could identify that I was there to help, to serve, and to promote awareness, the fear goes away.

In this video, I guide the audience to do a simple stretching and breathing exercise to showcase how these actions can help in therapy sessions. Way to start the talk before the food coma kicks in after lunch!

SPELL: Structure for Autism

Do you remember your first day in school or at work? It felt new, a little dangerous, and so scary! I bet it felt difficult to focus on anything because of all the uncertainty. Now imagine if there was a guidebook given to make that day easier - where to eat, who to seek help from, and what to do. This would change things and make you feel so comfortable that the day passes smoothly.

That is exactly how structure helps individuals with autism. It makes their day predictable, anxiety-free, and secure. Let’s learn practical tips on doing that in their lives (and perhaps our lives too!).

🚸 SPELL for Autism: Structure, Positive Approaches & Expectations, Empathy, Low Arousal, and Links

Top 3 things I learned about Autism:
👀 Eye contact does not 🚫 equals attention. Children with autism may still be paying close attention to you despite not looking at you. Give them time and space, and they’ll interact with you!

🌪 Behaviors have functions. Spinning, humming, drawing, or even counting serves to soothe anxiety and introduce structure. Let them self-soothe, and they will complete the tasks assigned.

🧠 You never know everything. It is okay to not know everything, and similarly, it is NOT okay to be a know-it-all. New information are coming out all the time about autism, and it amazes even those who are autism specialists!

Can’t wait to apply this approach and principles to the children and families that I’m working with 😍

📣 If you are a parent or caregiver of a person with autism, feel free to reach out if you:
1. Wish to learn about implementing structure (routines, timetables, schedules)
2. Want to learn how to approach a person with autism (social interactions, understanding behaviors, setting rules)
3. Hope to learn more about autism (autism facts, behaviors, potential challenges)
4. Want to establish a positive environment (safe, comfortable, and good environment for learning)
5. Wish to know when and how to connect with other professionals (pediatricians, speech therapists, occupational therapists, behavioral therapists, etc.)

As the founder of Candid Conversations for Malaysian Clinical Psychologists, it was a night of inspiration and wonder as introductions were made, connections were built, and lasting friendships were born.

This time round, we are looking at ways of working with local organizations to improve the profession’s wellbeing at the workplace. Loving the profession means that we create awareness about our services, find opportunities to serve in society, and gain support from peers or seniors in the industry.

Cheers!

“No, no, NOOOOOOOO!”

If anything, it’s the no behaviors that frustrate us the most from our dear children. Once they hit the magical age between 2- to 4-years-old, it’s like they just want to say “no” to everything!

😁“Do you want to go out?”
“NO”

😐”Do you want to stay inside then?”
“NOOO”

😩”Okay, let’s do nothing.”
“NO, NO, NO!”

🤯

*Some tips that help in these situations:*
1. Ask less questions: Instruct, instead of asking children what they want. Use short sentences especially when you see them getting upset. When children get emotionally triggered, it is even harder to make choices.
2. Use more actions: If your child says “no” to a simple request such as “sit here”, you can pat the chair or nudge the chair in their direction. Chances are, they’ll just sit.
3. Do not reinforce “no”: When your child is saying “no, no, no”, try not to give it attention by going to them, holding them, and asking “what’s wrong? Why no?”. This can actually positively reinforce the “no” because they get a lot of attention from you.

What else helps for you?

Candid Conversations: Connecting and Relating to Autistic Adults

Our latest meet involved guest speakers sharing about their personal experience in regards to autism in adults. Glad that a pretty good turnout came to support the cozy sharing session!

Some highlights:
-“The Lost Generation”; pressures, misdiagnoses, and mental health issues among missed diagnosis cases
-Accompanying symptoms: OCD, anxiety, eating disorders
-Accomodating different preferences in sessions: silences, early dismissals, blunt responses

Such an inspiring and amazing session!
