HADRAMAUT 101

Who doesn’t love a bit of history? 🇾🇪

Hadramaut valley in central Yemen comprises of hilly areas near the coast and inland valley which includes major towns like Al-Mukalla, Shibam, Tarim, Al-Ghuraf and Al-Riyan. Hadramaut is home to the world’s finest honey (Sidr honey) and “the world’s oldest skyscraper city” in Shibam. Shibam has been referred as the ‘Manhattan’ or ‘Chicago’ of the desert. It is one of the oldest example of urban planning based on vertical construction principles. Mudbrick buildings are a usual sight, with some measuring over 30m (100ft) high.

The Hadramaut region has diverse coastal, mountainous, and desert climate. Coastal (hot in summer, moderate in winter), mountainous (moderately hot in summer, cold in winter), and desert (hot and dry all year). Honey, fish products, lime and to***co are widely exported from this region.

The people of Hadhramaut are called Hadhrami. They formerly spoke Hadramautic, but now predominantly speak Hadhrami Arabic. Historically, several Sultans in the Malay Archipelago, such as the Sultanate of Malacca and Sultanate of Pontianak were descents of Hadhrami.

DID YOU KNOW?

Though small in size, honeybees are such complex and sophisticated creatures that plays a critical role in agriculture. 1/3 of the world's food supply is dependent on these little pollinators.

🐝 Bees can sense the hormone a human gives off when they're scared. They'll attack if they feel their hive is threatened
🐝 Bees are pretty loud because they beat their wings 11,400 times per minute (about 200 times per second)
🐝 Honey bees use their front feet, tongue, jaw and antennae to taste with. The tips of the antennae have more than 300 taste sensors

BUILDING THAT HEALTHY HABIT

We read your entries for the Lunar — p/s: due to the great number of entries, winners will be announced tomorrow! 😉 — we are super excited for you to commit to those healthy habits this year. Below are some of your entries:

• Stretching every morning or practising yoga to start the day feeling refreshed
• Replacing sugar with honey
• Drinking a glass of water with Sidr honey in the morning
• Keeping hydrated with at least 2 litres of water daily
• Not skipping breakfast
• Thinking positively
• Disconnect from technology an hour before bed to improve sleep
• Journalling to track progress and reflect

Two things we would suggest to keep the habit are to start small and remain consistent. One of the biggest mistakes people make when trying to form a new habit is taking on too much, too quickly.

A good example is to try and drink an extra glass a water daily rather than trying to drink eight, especially if you're used to only 3-4 a day. Consistency is key too, so if you can't do daily, maybe try every other day or every 2 days to start with for at least 4 weeks and work your way up.

We hope you remain steadfast this year and don't forget to celebrate the small wins! ✨

CRISPY HONEY SHRIMP 🍤

There's just so many ways to cook with honey, but these cripsy fried prawns tossed in sweet, sticky honey sauce is definitely one of our favorites within Chinese cuisine! You can try it with chicken, beef, squid, or even vegetables like eggplant. Perfect combination of sweet and savoury with a hint of sesame, you could kick it up a notch by including sweet chilli or crushed chilli flakes to the mixture if you prefer things a little spicy.

As the days in the new year passes quickly, so does our hopes and dreams. New goals and plans may be set but one thing that should be a non-negotiable this year, is your health and well-being. Whether it's small, healthy habits or embarking on a major health makeover, here's some helpful tips to consider:

✨ Be kinder to yourself - practicing self-compassion and not being too hard on ourselves have shown to reduce stress, lower heart rate, boosts immunity, reduce anxiety and depression, have better body image and healthier habits
✨ Start nourishing - an easy one to practice daily is to reduce your sugar intake and make healthy swaps like using Sidr honey instead of table sugar or artificial sweeteners
✨Move the way you love - be it swimming, dancing, yoga or running. You’re more likely to achieve healthy movements by doing something you enjoy.

Al Asal challenges you to mindfully prioritise health and well-being each day. Even if you jumped off the bandwagon along the way, be kind to yourself and begin again.

Cheers to a great and healthy year ahead! 🎊
