What a year, 2023!!

From the moment we decide to move the entire family to HK, finding a new home in HK, packing up our beloved home in Penang, sending Pepper to Brunei to escape quarantine in HK, our annual trip to UK and Greece, followed by the flight to HK for Sam and Ben to start new schools — it has been a quite a ride with so many emotions and rather overwhelming at times, to say the least.

WE DID IT!!
Despite facing 3 T10 warnings, 1 Black Rain, 1 Amber Rain, and significant flooding within our first two months in HK, we’ve finally settled under one roof. A special shoutout to our trusted helper, Sylvia Angon (rejoined us in Sept), who has been instrumental in maintaining our household and ensuring we’re well-fed (a task with three growing boys isn’t for the faint-hearted!).

Professionally, the move to HK also marked a pivotal point in my career in the spa and wellness industry as I’m back working full time with Raison d’Etre, a spa consultancy company based in Sweden. Teaching yoga and mindfulness meditation have profoundly influenced my growth, and these practices also guide me in my current role, as I spearhead the launch of upcoming spas and wellness sanctuaries.

Amidst our personal milestones, I’m deeply cognizant of the global challenges and heartaches many face. Families ripped apart from ego, using war to silence voices and the myriad of decisions that overshadow humanity deeply resonate with me. I’m often at a loss for words, but a quote shared by an esteemed yoga teacher, Simon Low, encapsulates this sentiment:

“Do not be dismayed by the brokenness of the world. All things break. And all things can be mended.
Not with time, as they say, but with intention.
So go.
Love intentionally, extravagantly, unconditionally.
The broken world waits in darkness for the light that is you.”― L.R. Knost

Wishing everyone a happy and healthy year ahead and may everyone contribute toward a more peaceful world ❤️

As humans, our nervous system is still wired to respond to stress as if we were being hunted by a predator during the Palaeolithic times. This response, known as sympathetic nervous system (or fight or flight response), redirects blood flow away from the digestive and reproductive organs to the skeletal muscles needed for survival. In contrast, the parasympathetic nervous system (rest & digest) allows blood to flow to the organs and tissues responsible for digestion and reproduction.

It's crucial to move between these two states for our overall well-being, but many of us spend too much time in fight or flight mode, leading to negative health outcomes. Various factors contribute to an overactive stress response, and self-care practices such as mindful movement/spending time in nature can help support a healthy nervous system.

Swipe left for some gentle and effective ways to down-regulate your nervous system when you feel stressed

And if you’d to spend the day down regulating your nervous system in the lush , join us on the upcoming Reset In Nature (daylong retreat).

After the first daylong retreat at , we are back again facilitating our second one!

Super excited to be collaborating with , and nature elements at to assist in resetting our nervous system.

This retreat offers an opportunity to spend the day in nature and periodic silence because our overestimated environment doesn’t allow our minds and bodies to rest and digest. We will be sharing self care practices such as mindful movement and breath-work, cooking a healthy lunch, guided mindfulness meditations tuning our awareness from outer to inner experiences, mindful art to explore our emotions and feelings, and therapeutic singing bowls to guide us into deep rest.

All these practices have proven to assist our nervous system returning to its resting states of balance and ease.

More info on the flyers and feel free to DM me if you have any questions!

How Does Nature Impacts Our Wellbeing?

Research reveals that environments can increase or reduce our stress response, which in turn impacts our bodies. The stress of an unpleasant environment can cause one to feel anxious, or sad, or helpless; elevating blood pressure, heart rate, and muscle tension and suppresses immune system. One study cited in the book Healing Gardens, researchers found that more than two-thirds of people chose a natural setting to retreat to when feeling stressed.

Read on to find out how nature impacts our wellbeing and why you should join us on our upcoming Mindful Retreat on Saturday, 11 Feb, 2023 😉

Nature heals
Exposure to nature not only makes you feel better emotionally, it contributes to your physical wellbeing, reducing blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and the production of stress hormones.

Nature soothes
Nature helps us cope with pain. A classic study demonstrated that patients who underwent gallbladder surgery; half had a view of trees and half had a view of a wall. Patients with the view of trees tolerated pain better, have fewer negative effects, and spent less time in a hospital.

Nature restores
In one study, 95% of those interviewed said their mood improved after spending time outside, changing from depressed, stressed, and anxious to more calm and balanced disposition. Another study (Ulrich, Kim, Cervinka) showed time in nature were associated with positive mood, psychological wellbeing, and vitality. In another interesting area, a research on children with ADHD showed time spent in nature increases their attention span later.

Nature connects
A study at the University of Illinois suggests residents in public housing who had trees and green space around their building reported knowing more people, having stronger feelings of community, having feelings of wanting to help and suppor each other, and have stronger feelings of belonging than residents in buildings without trees.

NAME IT TO TAME IT

We’ve all experienced having faced with difficult or challenging emotion that made us feel totally out of control. Something happens, or someone says something, and we instantly react. Our heart rate goes up, we get tunnel vision or can’t think or communicate clearly, and often react impulsively.

Dan Siegel, a clinical professor of psychiatry recommends “Name It To Tame”. It is a technique that involves noticing and labelling emotions as they’re happening. Identifying an intense emotion (“naming”) has the effect of reducing the stress and anxiety (“taming”) in the brain and the body that the emotion is causing.

This is where mindfulness comes in. With practice, mindfulness gives us the ability and space to pause, to notice the reactive emotions rise or feel the body and mind sizzling with reactivity, and acknowledge (or “name”) our emotions as we’re having them. When we are able to feel these difficult or challenging emotions, it is easier to choose how to respond instead of being carried away in a flood of emotional tornado.

Many has said mindfulness is the first step in emotional healing—to be able to turn toward and acknowledge our difficult thoughts and feelings (such as inadequacy, sadness, anger, confusion) with a spirit of openness and curiosity is the first step and that takes dedication and practice.

This week, in the 4-week course that I’m facilitating at HEART SPACE Holistic Therapy , we will be exploring the practice working skilfully with high and lows of life, not identifying with emotions and responding instead of reacting.

Super excited!
