As October is Sensory Processing Awareness Month, it’s a good reminder that what may look like “bad behaviour” is often a child trying to communicate in the only way they know how.
Biting, hitting, or skin picking may seem disruptive but they’re often signs of unmet sensory needs. These actions aren't random; they're signals.
Instead of focusing on stopping the behaviour right away, let’s pause and ask:
💭 What is my child trying to tell me? What sensory input are they seeking or struggling with?
When we understand the “why,” we can guide them toward safer, more appropriate ways to meet those needs and support them with understanding instead of punishment.
