'Tilizinwe' = Estamos Juntos / We are together! Education, community development and self-sustainab

Tilizinwe means ‘we are together’ in Tsonga, one of the local languages of Bazaruto Island, and this project has been established for and with the Machulane community on Bazaruto island in order to:

• Improve the standard of living of the community members by, firstly, addressing the lack of basic facilities such as ablutions, access to adequate health care and safe drinking water
• Provide skill building classes to the community members (currently English classes and Portuguese literacy classes) in order to equip them with the tools necessary to seek out employment
• Encourage community members to engage in environmentally conservative practices by providing them with the knowledge to do so
• Promote Self-sustainability, alternate employment and income opportunities

We are heartbroken to report that our beautiful Tilizinwe Bazaruto school burnt down a week ago. A nearby cooking fire got out of control, and left us with nothing. All the audiovisual, classroom, and kitchen equipment, and all of the books .. gone. This wonderful building was the place that Tilizinwe Bazaruto cooked and offered meals to the local kids 6 days a week, where Tilizinwe and MMF offered marine education classes, and where ONG SIM gave Portugeuse lessons. While we are continuing with our classes and activities as best as we can, we hope to rebuild our lovely school in the near future. If you would like to help, click the link below to donate. We at Tilizinwe Bazaruto are so incredibly proud of this young man. Armando was one of the first students in our sponsorship programme. Most of the sponsored children fail a few subjects at high-school, repeat one or two grades - the schooling they receive on the island does not adequately prepare them for mainland education, and the work is tough for them. Armando never failed a subject, never repeated a year, never got into trouble. Since his first day at high-school under the sponsorship programme, he has been working extremely hard in order to create a better future for himself. Now, he is studying accounting at University. Unfortunately, his education sponsor couldn't continue his sponsorship due to unforeseen circumstances - so Tilizinwe has been fighting tooth and nail to find the funds to keep his dream alive.
