Every year, 1 in 10 babies is born too soon. Premature birth can be overwhelming for parents and challenging for babies, but with the right care and support, many thrive.

On World Prematurity Day, we stand with families walking this journey. Together, we raise awareness, share hope, and emphasise the importance of maternal and newborn health.💜

If you are expecting or navigating a premature birth, know that you are not alone.

There’s a lot of noise when it comes to the pill, and not all of it is true.

Let’s clear a few things up:

✨ Fertility: The pill does not cause infertility. Once you stop, your cycle usually returns within weeks or months. How long it takes to conceive depends on your age and overall health, not the pill.
✨ Periods: The pill can regulate cycles, make bleeding lighter, or sometimes stop periods altogether. This is safe and reversible.
✨ Weight & skin: Some women notice changes in weight or acne, others notice improvements; every body responds differently.
✨ Mood & energy: Hormonal contraception can affect mood for some, while others feel no change.

The bottom line? The pill is safe and effective when used correctly, but it’s not one-size-fits-all.

If you’re thinking about starting, stopping, or changing your contraception, speak to your gynaecologist. Your body, your goals, and your health deserve the right fit.

Being a woman is not easy.

From the outside, it can look like we’re expected to “keep up”: same hours, same pace, same demands. But the truth is, women’s bodies carry a different load.

Hormones rise and fall. Reproductive health brings unique challenges. Mental health is affected by factors our male counterparts may never experience.

And all of this sits on top of careers, families, relationships, and daily responsibilities.

If you’ve been feeling stretched thin, overwhelmed, or like you’re not “keeping up,” please remember this: it’s not because you are weak. It’s because being a woman comes with its own set of complexities that deserve recognition, compassion, and care.

At Dr Sheetekela's practice, women’s health is at the centre of what we do — not only physical health, but the emotional and mental load that comes with it. You do not have to carry it alone.

Fertility is often misunderstood, and social media is full of myths. Here is the truth:

🌷Women are most fertile in their 20s, but many still conceive in their 30s.
🌷Fertility does decline with age, especially after 35, but it does not disappear overnight.
🌷Men’s fertility also changes with age — it is not only about women.
🌷Lifestyle factors (stress, smoking, weight, alcohol) can make a big difference.

Knowledge is power. If you are thinking about starting a family, a simple fertility check-up can give you clarity.

Think HPV is just a teenage issue? Think again. Human Papillomavirus is the most common s*xually transmitted infection, and some strains are linked to cervical cancer.

The good news? The HPV vaccine can protect you — and it is not only for teenagers. Women and men up to the age of 45 can still benefit.

💉 Prevention is always better than treatment. If you have not had your HPV vaccine yet, it is worth asking your doctor about it.

🌹Pain during or after s*x
🌹Chronic fatigue
🌹Lower back and pelvic pain outside of your period

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month — a reminder to prioritise your health. Regular self-checks and screenings can make all the difference when it comes to early detection.

Take a moment this month to schedule your check-up, encourage the women in your life to do the same, and help spread awareness. We previously shared a post on how to do a self-check step by step — take a look and try it at home. If you notice anything unusual, make sure to follow up with your doctor.

Reproductive health isn’t just about pregnancy or your cycle — it’s connected to your mental clarity, energy levels, skin, mood, and even heart health.

Here are a few surprising facts:
🌸 Hormonal imbalances can lead to anxiety, insomnia, or brain fog — not just irregular periods.
🌸 Polycystic O***y Syndrome (PCOS) can increase your risk of diabetes and heart disease.
🌸 Birth control can help with more than just preventing pregnancy — it can treat acne, regulate cycles, and manage painful periods.
🌸 Regular pap smears and pelvic exams can catch early signs of cervical cancer — even when you feel perfectly fine.
🌸 Menstrual pain isn’t always “normal.” If it's interfering with daily life, it’s time to get checked.

Caring for your reproductive health is caring for your whole self.

Hormones may be tiny, but their impact is huge. From your mood to your metabolism, skin, sleep, menstrual cycle, fertility, and even weight — hormones are the chemical messengers that keep your body in balance.

⚖️ When hormones are out of balance, you might notice:
🔸 Irregular periods
🔸 Unexplained weight changes
🔸 Mood swings or anxiety
🔸 Acne or skin changes
🔸 Low energy or poor sleep
🔸 Fertility issues

This is your body’s way of saying: “Let’s pay attention.”

Hormonal imbalances are common, but they’re also treatable — especially with the right guidance.

💡 Whether you're dealing with PCOS, thyroid issues, perimenopause, or just not feeling like yourself — let’s talk about what your hormones might be trying to tell you.
