INTRODUCTION TO FIRST AID

First Aid is the immediate care given to a person who is injured or suddenly becomes ill before professional medical help is available. It involves simple but effective techniques that can save lives, prevent a condition from worsening, and promote recovery.
Whether it’s a minor cut, choking, or a life-threatening emergency like cardiac arrest, basic knowledge of First Aid can make a huge difference. First Aid is not only for medical professionals — anyone can learn it and use it in everyday situations, at home, school, work, or in public spaces.

PRINCIPLES OF FIRST AID
The principles of First Aid are the basic guidelines that ensure help is given safely, effectively, and responsibly in emergency situations. These principles prioritize life-saving, preventing harm, and promoting recovery.

1. PRESERVE LIFE : The primary goal is to save lives. Give immediate care to prevent the casualty’s condition from worsening. Perform life-saving actions like CPR if necessary.

2. PREVENT FURTHER HARM: Protect the injured person from further injury or danger. Do not move the person unnecessarily (unless they are in danger). Control bleeding, immobilize fractures, and remove hazards from the environment.

3. PROMOTE RECOVERY: Help the casualty to recover comfortably. Reassure them and keep them calm. Apply appropriate First Aid techniques that support healing.

4. PROVIDE COMFORT AND REASSURANCE: Stay calm and composed. Offer emotional support — your attitude can help reduce the casualty’s fear and anxiety.

5. ENSURE SAFETY (Your Own and the Casualty’s): Check for danger before approaching (fire, electricity, traffic, etc.) Only give First Aid if it's safe to do so. Use gloves or protective barriers if available to prevent infection.

6. CALL FOR PROFESSIONAL HELP EARLY: Know your limits. First Aid is not a substitute for professional medical care. Call emergency services (e.g., 911 or your local number) as soon as necessary. Provide accurate and clear information about the situation.

7. DO NO HARM: Only perform procedures you are trained or confident to do.
Avoid using unproven or unsafe techniques. Stay within the scope of basic First Aid knowledge.

8. FOLLOW THE ABCs OF FIRST AID
AIRWAY: Ensure the airway is open and clear.
Breathing: Check for normal breathing.
Circulation: Look for signs of circulation (e.g., pulse, bleeding).

1. What does BLS stand for, and what is its main purpose?
👉BLS stands for Basic Life Support.
👇Main Purpose:
BLS is a level of medical care used in emergency situations to sustain life until advanced medical care is available. It is typically performed by healthcare providers, trained responders, or even laypersons.

👇Key Objectives of BLS:
Maintain airway patency (keep the airway open)
Support breathing
Maintain circulation of blood (especially to the brain and heart)
Prevent deterioration of the patient’s condition
Core Components:
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
Use of Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
Relief of choking (airway obstruction).

*2. In BLS, what does the “CAB” sequence represent?*
The CAB sequence is the order of steps to follow when performing CPR.
C – Circulation
Start with chest compressions
Helps pump blood to vital organs (brain and heart)
Compression rate: 100–120 per minute
Depth: about 5–6 cm in adults
A – Airway
Open the airway using:
Head-tilt, chin-lift (if no spinal injury suspected)
Ensures air can enter the lungs
B – Breathing
Provide rescue breaths
Usually 2 breaths after 30 compressions
Each breath should last about 1 second, making the chest rise
Why CAB instead of ABC?
Previously it was ABC (Airway, Breathing, Circulation), but it was changed to CAB because;
Immediate chest compressions are critical to maintain blood flow
Delaying compressions reduces survival chances.

THE POWER OF LOCUST BEANS (IRU/OGIRI OKPEYE)

Very few Nigerian foods are rich in probiotics and prebiotics and Iru (Ogiri Okpeye) leads the charge.

Equally rich in protein, fat, vitamins and minerals, Iru (Ogiri Okpeye) adds more than flavor to foods; it is a digestive thunderstorm.

Here are 5 solid reasons to use it👇🏻

A single kidney can do far more than most people realize. When one kidney is removed or donated, the remaining kidney does not just “work harder” — it actually begins to change. Through a process called compensatory hypertrophy, the surviving kidney increases in size and boosts its filtering capacity so it can handle the body’s needs on its own.

This adaptation allows the body to keep removing waste, balancing fluids, and regulating essential minerals with surprising efficiency. In many cases, people who donate a kidney or are born with only one healthy kidney can still live normal, active, and healthy lives. Regular medical checkups and a healthy lifestyle are still important, but the body’s ability to adjust is truly extraordinary.

It is one of the clearest examples of how resilient and adaptable human anatomy can be. Even with just one kidney, the body is often able to maintain stability and function remarkably well for years.
