HEPATITIS AND YOUR DIET
It is therefore extremely important for Hepatitis patients to watch their diet by eating the right types of food. The diet should include foods that are easy on the liver and exclude foods that cause the liver to work harder as this can delay a patient’s recovery from the disease

RECOMMENDED FOODS TO EAT

For a patient with Hepatitis food choices are not limited to a few bland dishes. There are plenty of healthy, tasty food options which are both beneficial for the liver and for the recovery process.

WHOLE GRAINS: These can be in the form of bran, whole wheat bread or cereal, brown rice, whole grain pasta, porridge or corn.
FRUITS AND VEGETABLES: Fruits and vegetables should be a significant part of any diet to help in liver disease. They are full of essential nutrients and are easy to digest. As a bonus, they also contain antioxidants, which can protect the liver cells from damage. However, it is recommended that one go easy on starchy vegetables such as potatoes when on a Hepatitis recovery diet. While canned or frozen fruits are fine it is always a good idea to try and eat fresh and seasonal produce when possible.
FATS: Olive oil, canola oil and flaxseed oil are all healthy fats that are recommended as part of a diet for patients with Hepatitis
HEALTHY PROTEINS: Healthy proteins in the form of low-fat milk and dairy products along with lean meats, beans, eggs and soy products can also be a part of a healthy liver diet
FOODS TO AVOID

It is equally important to avoid certain foods during Hepatitis as they can be harmful to the liver. Excessive consumption of these can aggravate the disease and even lead to permanent liver damage.

PROCESSED FOODS: These includes processed breads, cheese. Almost all fast -food items are also best avoided during Hepatitis, as they can worsen recovery times.
HYDROGENATED OILS: Avoid consuming foods high in saturated fats or trans-fats.
SUGAR: Sugar intake should be limited for a healthy liver. This includes all artificial sweeteners as well as fruits juices. Juices have high concentrations of sugar in them, which can be difficult for the liver to digest when the body is under attack from the Hepatitis virus
SALT: Hepatitis patients should also severely limit their salt intake. Also refrain from eating high-sodium foods. This means no canned soups or store-bought sauces.
MEATS: When on a Hepatitis diet, avoid eating meat especially red meats due to their high sodium content. If you must, stick to lean cuts and eat only once or twice a week.
ADDITIONAL TIPS

Avoid alcohol and ci******es for a healthy liver.
Avoid taking vitamin supplements or over-the-counter drugs without consulting your doctor.
Don’t skip meals when recovering from Hepatitis.
Eat small meals.
Drink lots of water.
Get enough sleep

HEPATITIS AND ITS TRANSMISSION
The transmission of hepatitis B is so easy. Learn how to protect your family and your loved ones from being infected. The most common ways of transmission includes:

S*X: You can get it if you have unprotected s*x with someone who has it and your partner’s blood, saliva, semen, or vaginal secretions enter your body.
SHARING NEEDLES: The virus spreads easily via needles and syringes contaminated with infected blood.
ACCIDENTAL NEEDLE STICKS: Health care workers and anyone else who comes in contact with human blood can get it this way.
MOTHER TO CHILD: Pregnant women with hepatitis B can pass it to their babies during childbirth. But there’s a vaccine to prevent newborns from becoming infected. If you’re pregnant, you might pass the virus to your baby at birth. It’s less likely to happen during your pregnancy. If your baby gets the virus and isn’t treated, he could have long-term liver problems. All newborns with infected mothers should get hepatitis B immune globulin and the vaccine for hepatitis at birth and during their first year of life.
HOW TO PREVENT ITS SPREAD

Get vaccinated (if you haven’t already been infected).
Use condoms every time you have s*x.
Wear gloves when you clean up after others, especially if you have to touch bandages, tampons, and linens.
Cover all open cuts or wounds.
Don’t share razors, toothbrushes, nail care tools, or pierced earrings with anyone.
Don’t share chewing gum, and don’t pre-chew food for a baby.
Make certain that any needles for drugs, ear piercing, or tattoos — or tools for manicures and pedicures — are properly sterilized.
Clean up blood with one part household bleach and 10 parts water.

What are the symptoms of hepatitis?
Many people with hepatitis A, B, C, D or E exhibit only mild symptoms or no symptoms at all. Each form of the virus, however, can cause more severe symptoms. Symptoms of hepatitis A, B and C may include fever, malaise, loss of appetite, diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal discomfort, dark-coloured urine and jaundice (a yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes). In some cases, the virus can also cause a chronic liver infection that can later develop into cirrhosis (a scarring of the liver) or liver cancer. These patients are at risk of death.
Hepatitis D (HDV) is only found in people already infected with hepatitis B (HBV); however, the dual infection of HBV and HDV can cause a more serious infection and poorer health outcomes, including accelerated progression to cirrhosis. Development of chronic hepatitis D is rare.
Hepatitis E (HEV) begins with mild fever, reduced appetite, nausea and vomiting lasting for a few days. Some persons may also have abdominal pain, itching (without skin lesions), skin rash or joint pain. They may also exhibit jaundice, with dark urine and pale stools, and a slightly enlarged, tender liver (hepatomegaly), or occasionally acute liver failure.

What is hepatitis?
Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver that can cause a range of health problems and can be fatal. There are five main strains of the hepatitis virus, referred to as types A, B, C, D and E. While they all cause liver disease, they differ in important ways including modes of transmission, severity of the illness, geographical distribution and prevention methods. In particular, types B and C lead to chronic disease in hundreds of millions of people and, together, are the most common cause of liver cirrhosis, cancer and viral hepatitis-related deaths. An estimated 325 million people worldwide live with hepatitis B and/or C, and for most, testing and treatment remains beyond reach.
Some types of hepatitis are preventable through vaccination.
