Kelina Hospital celebrates 212 successful prostate surgeries for the year 2025.
These surgeries included Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP), the most effective way of dealing with prostatic obstructive obstruction to the urethra, causing retention of urine and posing a threat to the kidneys. There are more conservative methods of dealing with this obstruction, but they are less effective. Also included were Laparoscopic and Robotic Radical Prostatectomy for Prostate Cancer. No patient had open prostate surgery. This is probably the highest number of prostate surgeries performed in one year by any hospital in Nigeria.
Kelina Hospital is a high-volume urological services hospital. The hospital focuses on the most effective methods of prostate surgery and has performed over 6,000 surgeries since inception, with a mortality rate of less than 0.02, which is better than rates from some of the best hospitals in the world.
These milestones were celebrated this January at a press conference in Lagos, where the hospital is located at 7, Ologun Agbaje Street, off Adeola Odeku Street, Victoria Island, Lagos. The other branch of the hospital is located at 3rd Avenue by 34 Crescent, Gwarinpa, Abuja.
Present at the press conference were Dr. Bertin Njinou, a Robotic Surgeon who has performed over 2,000 robotic surgical procedures in his career, Dr. Aklilu Getachew, a University Professor who joined the services of the hospital on a full-time basis in 2025, Dr. Kenechi Nedosa who came in from the Abuja branch and Dr. C. U. Undie, a Consultant Urologist and lead Laser Surgeon who has done over 5,000 surgeries in his career. The aim of the Press Conference was to celebrate our milestones and create awareness of what is available here at home, so Nigerians could be offered an option of seeking comparable healthcare services at home, especially for those who cannot afford the extra costs for travelling abroad. The hospital expressed gratitude to Dr Mahesh Desai, former President of SIU, for the training opportunities he offered our staff, beginning in 2012 when Kelina Hospital did the first laparoscopic radical prostatectomy in Nigeria.
The hospital extended appreciation to all our patients and their families who have come to us for their healthcare needs, and noted that their trust has been our motivation. We also thanked the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria for creating the enabling environment to reverse medical tourism, making it easier to collaborate with healthcare experts from around the world, and curbing the pressure on our foreign exchange.
