World AMR Awareness week, Day 6.
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a pressing global health issue, and animals play a significant role in its development and spread. Let's have a look at the risks:
Antimicrobial resistance occurs when microorganisms like bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi develop resistance to medications, making them ineffective against infections.
How Animals Contribute to AMR
1. Overuse of antibiotics in animals: Antibiotics are often used in animal farming to promote growth, prevent, and treat diseases. Using less or more than the prescribed dose of these drugs leads to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which can spread to humans through
i) animal products such as meat, dairy, and eggs.
ii) the environment: air, water, and soil polluted by animal waste
iii) direct contact: Handling infected animals or contaminated surfaces
2. Poor infection control practices: Inadequate hygiene and sanitation on animal farms, livestock markets, abattoir, and markets facilitate the spread of resistant bacteria from animals to the environment and humans.
Risks to Human Health
1. Increased risk of infections: Resistant bacteria from animals can cause life-threatening infections in humans.
2. Reduced antibiotic effectiveness: Overuse of antibiotics in animals and failure to observe withdrawal period can accelerate AMR, reducing the effectiveness of antibiotics in humans who consume products from affected animals.
3. Economic burden: AMR is estimated to cost the global economy billions of dollars annually. More money is required for the few available effective medications.
Prevention Strategies
1. Responsible antibiotic use in animals: Use antibiotics only when necessary, and follow veterinary guidance.
2. Improved infection control : Implement strict hygiene and sanitation practices on animal farms and markets.
3. Vaccination and alternative therapies: Vaccinate animals and explore alternative methods to promote animal health and reduce the need for antibiotics.
