*Edo State Commemorates International Adolescent Health Week**

Edo State joined the rest of the world to mark the 2025 International Adolescent Health Week with activities focused on promoting the physical and mental well-being of young people.

This year’s theme, *“Thriving Inside and Out: Strengthening Adolescent Physical and Mental Health,”* reflects the state government’s commitment to building a healthier future for adolescents.

Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Stanley Ehiarimwian, said adolescents constitute a large part of the population and hold great potential for development through their creativity and energy.

He explained that despite this potential, many young people face significant health and social challenges such as substance abuse, cultism, malnutrition, and mental health issues that often go unnoticed or untreated. He also identified ignorance, stigma, and restrictive laws as major barriers preventing adolescents from accessing proper healthcare.

Dr. Ehiarimwian added that under the leadership of Governor Monday Okpebholo, the state government is working with partners to make health facilities more adolescent-friendly. The initiative also includes sexuality education to help young people make informed decisions and counselling services for mental health and stress management.

He called on parents, teachers, and community leaders to create supportive environments that encourage open discussions and positive development for adolescents as they grow into adulthood.

*Edo State Marks World Mental Health Day*

Edo State joined the rest of the world to commemorate the *2025 World Mental Health Day* with a call for greater attention to mental well-being, especially during emergencies and disasters.

This year’s theme, “Access to Services: Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies,” highlights the importance of integrating mental health care into every emergency response.

Speaking at a press briefing to mark the event, the *Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole*, noted that while much focus is often placed on physical treatment during crises such as floods, fires, and accidents, many survivors are left with emotional and psychological trauma that also require care and support.

He observed that the rise in mental health challenges, particularly among young people, has been worsened by drug and substance abuse. He added that the misuse of drugs such as ma*****na, tramadol, and other narcotics continues to destroy lives and families.

Dr. Oshiomhole explained that under the leadership of *His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo*, the state government has taken decisive steps to tackle these challenges. He highlighted the inauguration of the Edo State Drug Control Committee as one of the key measures designed to reduce drug abuse, expand access to rehabilitation services, and help young people recover and lead productive lives.

He emphasized that mental health is central to the well-being and development of every society, adding that the government is working to make mental health care more accessible and affordable in both urban and rural areas.

The Commissioner also called on the media, families, health workers, and community groups to support the government’s efforts by spreading awareness, showing compassion, and helping to end the stigma against people living with mental health conditions.

Edo Launches Maternal And Neonatal Mortality Reduction Initiative

The Edo State Government has commenced a five-day workshop to mark the official launch of the Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII), aimed at improving the survival rate of mothers and newborns across the State.

The workshop brought together key health stakeholders, including officials from the Federal Ministry of Health, representatives of the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, professional bodies, and local health authorities.

The program, first introduced by the Federal Government in November 2024, seeks to strengthen maternal and newborn health systems and reduce preventable deaths through innovation, collaboration, and evidence-based planning.

The Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, while flagging off the MAMII initiative in the state, said, "Over the course of the workshop, participants are expected to deepen their understanding of the framework and objectives of MAMII, explore the causes of maternal and neonatal deaths, and develop strategies to improve health outcomes in communities across the state."

The Edo State SWAP Coordinator, Dr. Godswill Omijie, explained that the MAMII Program is designed to address the root causes of maternal and neonatal mortality and to identify practical solutions to eliminate them. He revealed that four local government areas currently account for the highest number of cases, making targeted intervention crucial.

Deputy Director at the National Health Insurance, Mr. Omoruyi Iyahen, who gave an overview of the MAMII strategy, highlighted the progress made so far in reducing mortality rates across the country while stressing that the ultimate goal is to bring maternal and neonatal deaths down to zero.

Similarly the Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, Edo State Branch, Dr. Eustace Oseghale, who cautioned that it takes continuous effort to ensure that no woman loses her life while giving birth.

In attendance were representatives of the Federal Ministry of Health, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Andrew Iyamu, and the Chairman of the Edo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr. Odiase Ehiabhi. They all commended the initiative as a timely intervention to strengthen maternal care and reduce death rates.

The Edo State Government, through this initiative, has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the lives of mothers and children, ensuring that every birth is safe and every life counts.
