LET'S TALK ABOUT COLD SORES
WHAT ARE COLD SORES?
COLD SORES, also known as fever blisters, are small, fluid-filled blisters that appear on the lips, mouth, or around the oral area. They are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).
CAUSES AND TRANSMISSION
•Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV): Two types, HSV-1 and HSV-2, can cause cold sores.
•Transmission: Through direct contact with infected fluid, such as:
√ Kissing
√ Sharing utensils or personal items
√Touching infected skin or fluid
SYMPTOMS
•Blisters: Small, fluid-filled blisters on the lip or around the mouth
•Redness and swelling: Skin around the blisters may be red and swollen
•Pain: Blisters can be painful, especially when touched or exposed to certain triggers
TREATMENT AND MANAGEMENT
√ Self-healing : Cold sores usually heal on their own within several days to 2 weeks
√ Antiviral medications: Can help manage symptoms and reduce duration
√ Good hygiene: Avoid touching or picking at cold sores to prevent spreading the infection
PREVENTION
√ Avoid close contact: With someone who has an active cold sore
√ Practice good hygiene: Wash hands frequently, avoid sharing personal items
√ Avoid triggers: Stress, sun exposure, and other factors can trigger cold sore outbreaks
IMPORTANT NOTE:
• Cold sores are not caused by headaches, but rather by the herpes simplex virus.
By understanding cold sores, individuals can take steps to manage symptoms, prevent transmission, and reduce the frequency of outbreaks.
