Title: Before You Pick the Herb: The Real First Step in Spiritual Herbalism
Greetings, children of the Earth. I am Kpakpandommiri, a traditionalist and spiritual herbalist. Many people ask me, "What is the first herb I should use for protection? For healing? For blessing?"
My answer often surprises them.
The first step is not in a book or a recipe. It is not about finding the most powerful root. The first step is in your relationship.
In our tradition, we do not use plants. We work with them. Every leaf, every root, every seed has a life forceโa spirit. You cannot force a spirit. You must build an alliance with it.
So, before you ever make a tea, a bath, or a charm, your first practice must be this:
Approach with Respect.
When you go to a plant, whether in the forest or your garden, pause.
1. Speak to it in your mind or with a soft voice. State your name and your intention.
2. Ask for its permission. Feel with your spirit. Does it feel open and willing? Or heavy and closed? A willing plant is a powerful ally.
3. Always give an offering of thanks. A little pure water, a pinch of cornmeal, or a song of gratitude. This is not superstition; it is the law of reciprocity. It is how trust is built.
This simple, sacred practice separates true spiritual herbalism from simply following a recipe. It connects you to the ancient ways of our ancestors who walked in constant conversation with the Earth.
Your first assignment today: Go to a plant you know, even if it's just a leaf of Scent Leaf or Basil in your kitchen. Sit with it. Feel its energy. Introduce yourself. This is where your true power begins.
What plant did you connect with today? Share its name in the comments below.
