Microbiology: The scientific study of small organisms which cannot be seen by the naked eyes. They can be unicellular, multicellular, or exist as cell clusters. We study these organisms to understand their behaviour. Some are said to be pathogenic, this means that they cause diseases in plants and animals. Others are beneficial to man (yeast for example is used in bakeries as a rising agent), maintaining human health, decomposition of dead matter to release oxygen. The knowledge obtained is useful in producing foods, treating waste water, creating biofuels, for research purposes and in medicine.
