Katelyn Ricchini is a recovering mom who was pulled over by Deputy Shawn Singleton for speeding. She was already having a bad day. Katelyn was trying her best to rebuild her life and care for her family. When Shawn saw her, something changed. Instead of seeing someone to punish, he saw a person who needed kindness and let her off with just a warning. In the bodycam video, Shawn asked about her story, listened to her, and treated her with respect.

Katelyn had been through a lot. She was recovering from struggles that many people don't see. She felt small, ashamed, and was deeply hurting inside. Shawn asked her a simple question and said, "Do you need a hug?" Katelyn immediately broke down in tears and got out of the car to hug him. Katelyn later said, "He saw me as a person."

That day reminded Katelyn that she is more than her mistakes. She is a mother, a fighter, and a human being worthy of love and dignity. When Shawn hugged Katelyn, he said, "Don't lose that fight that's in you because there is something in you that's driving you to a better life." It's amazing how one small act of kindness made all the difference, and that's giving her the strength to keep going.

When they called my name, my father straightened up a little. The same hands that hold the broom every morning shook as they clapped: hands that paid for the tickets, the books used, and the meals that sustained me. He studied by my side when I was tired, saying that a clean street and an honest heart are the beginning of any future.
I hugged him and whispered, "This diploma has your fingerprints on it." I looked up and imagined my mother's smile in the silent sky.
