LAGOS PROBES REPORTED DEATH FOLLOWING COSMETIC SURGERY

• Government assures thorough investigation
• Warns against patronising unaccredited facilities

The Lagos State Government, through the Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), has commenced a full investigation into the reported death of a Lagos socialite popularly known as “Elena,” who allegedly died after undergoing a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) cosmetic procedure at a clinic in the State.

The development follows reports circulating on social media alleging that the young woman developed complications after the aesthetic procedure, which reportedly occurred either during or shortly after the surgery. While details of the incident are still being verified, the State Government has assured the public that a thorough, professional, and transparent investigation has been initiated to determine the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate event.

Preliminary information indicates that the clinic where the procedure reportedly took place is registered with HEFAMAA. However, the Agency notes that registration does not preclude any facility from regulatory scrutiny, particularly when incidents involving patient safety are reported.

As the statutory regulatory body responsible for monitoring, licensing, and accrediting healthcare facilities in Lagos State, HEFAMAA ensures that all health facilities comply with established operational standards, professional guidelines, and patient safety protocols.

The Agency reiterates that aesthetic and cosmetic surgical procedures are governed by clearly defined regulatory standards in Lagos State. These standards include requirements relating to facility infrastructure, practitioner qualifications, infection prevention and control protocols, patient consent procedures, anaesthetic safety, and emergency response capacity.

Consequently, HEFAMAA has commenced a comprehensive review of the incident, including an assessment of compliance with regulatory standards, verification of the professional credentials of the medical personnel involved, and evaluation of the level of care provided to the patient before, during, and after the procedure.

Members of the public are therefore urged to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified or speculative information that may compromise the integrity of the ongoing investigation.

The Lagos State Government also advises residents seeking cosmetic or aesthetic procedures to exercise due diligence by ensuring that such services are obtained only from accredited health facilities and qualified medical practitioners with the requisite training and competence.

The Government remains firmly committed to protecting the health and safety of all residents through strengthened regulatory oversight, continuous monitoring of healthcare facilities, and strict enforcement of healthcare standards across the State.

Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.

Signed

Dr. Abiola Idowu
Permanent Secretary

Your Health, Your Right: How Lagos Is Protecting Patients from Unsafe Medical Practices

The Lagos State Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) is stepping up efforts to ensure that every resident of Lagos State receives safe, reliable, and government-approved healthcare services.

At a recent public awareness programme in Lagos Island Local Government Area, the Agency engaged directly with community members to explain how it safeguards health facilities across the state. Residents were informed about the continuous inspections carried out in hospitals, clinics, and maternity centres to ensure they meet approved standards. HEFAMAA also highlighted its strict registration and accreditation processes designed to stop unqualified individuals from operating and to protect patients from unsafe treatments.

To make healthcare verification easier for everyone, the Agency introduced simple digital tools that allow residents to confirm whether a hospital or clinic is officially licensed. By scanning a QR code displayed at accredited facilities, members of the public can instantly check a facility’s approval status. In addition, clear channels were shared for reporting suspicious or substandard medical practices, empowering citizens to take an active role in protecting their communities.

HEFAMAA encouraged residents to stay informed, speak up against unsafe healthcare practices, and share this knowledge with family and neighbours. Through stronger community partnership and active public participation, Lagos continues to build a healthcare system where safety, quality, and accountability remain top priorities for all.

Lagos State Strengthens Healthcare Safety Through Improved Monitoring and Digital Innovation

The Lagos State Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safe, quality, and reliable healthcare services for all residents across the state. This is being achieved through strict enforcement of healthcare standards, routine inspections, accreditation of health facilities, and the use of digital technology to curb unqualified medical practices.

This message was shared during a sensitisation campaign and town hall meeting held in Agege Local Government Area. Speaking on behalf of the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Abiola Idowu, the Deputy Director and Health Educator, Mrs. Omonike Oladunni, explained that HEFAMAA now operates a digital monitoring platform designed to make healthcare oversight faster and more transparent. According to her, the platform allows members of the public to verify accredited health facilities, access vital information, and report suspected unethical or illegal practices in the health sector.

Mrs. Oladunni emphasized that these measures are focused on protecting patients and ensuring that residents receive care only from qualified, ethical, and duly accredited healthcare providers. She urged community members and stakeholders to help spread awareness about HEFAMAA’s work and encourage the public to make use of the available reporting channels.

Also addressing participants, the Director of Nursing Services, Mrs. Oluwole Titilope, highlighted the importance of registering healthcare facilities, noting that registration sets minimum operational standards for both public and private health institutions. She further explained the introduction of QR codes as an easy feedback tool, enabling citizens to quickly access facility details and share their healthcare experiences.

Through these initiatives, HEFAMAA continues to strengthen trust in the healthcare system and safeguard the wellbeing of Lagos residents.
