One eye leads the other, and this leading eye is called the dominant eye. Just as a person may be right handed or left handed, so he may be right eyed or left eyed.

The dominant eye may be defined as that eye which performs the major function of seeing, being assisted by the less dominant fellow eye.

Glaucoma cannot be cured with eye drops, however, prescription eye drops are the most common treatment to lower eye pressure, slowing the disease’s progression, and preventing further vision loss.

These drops work by either reducing fluid production in the eye or improving fluid drainage, effectively managing the pressure that damages the optic nerve.

Congenital glaucoma is a genetic form of glaucoma that’s either present at birth or develops during very early childhood.

Congenital glaucoma prevents fluids from draining properly. It damages their vision and can even lead to blindness if it goes untreated.

Children should have surgery as soon as possible to correct the defect. Surgery can stop the progress of the disease and may recover some or all of their vision loss.

Hereditary glaucoma, also known as inherited glaucoma, is passed down from one generation to another through genetic inheritance.

It’s caused by mutations in specific genes responsible for the development and function of the eye’s drainage system, or outflow, which helps regulate the eye’s IOP.

IOP is the pressure inside the eye and is maintained by the balance between the production and drainage of the aqueous humor, a clear fluid that fills the front part of the eye.

Treatment can slow down or stop the progression of the disease. Regular eye exams also allow for ongoing monitoring of the disease.

Glaucoma damages the optic nerve, and once those nerve fibers are gone the vision loss is permanent, there’s no way to bring back what’s already been lost. What can be done is to lower the eye pressure with drops, medication, or surgery to stop the disease from getting worse, which helps preserve the vision from getting worse.

Early detection and regular check-ups are key because they catch the problem before a lot of damage occurs.
