‎Biochemists discovered medicines to treat HIV by targeting critical enzymes and proteins involved in the virus's life cycle. The first major breakthrough came in the late 1980s and early 1990s with the development of reverse transcriptase inhibitors such as zidovudine (AZT). These drugs block reverse transcriptase, an enzyme HIV uses to convert its RNA into DNA inside human cells. Without this step, the virus cannot replicate. Later, protease inhibitors were developed that interfere with another essential HIV enzyme needed to process viral proteins for assembling new viruses. Integrase inhibitors followed, blocking the integration of viral DNA into the host genome, halting infection progression. Combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) using multiple drugs from these classes became the standard, preventing the virus from rapidly mutating and developing resistance. The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded in 2008 to French biochemists Françoise Barré-Sinoussi and Luc Montagnier for their discovery of HIV in 1983. Their work laid the foundation for understanding AIDS as a viral disease and for all subsequent diagnostic and treatment advances. The Nobel Committee recognized the speed and precision of their discovery amid a global epidemic and highlighted the far-reaching impact on global health.
‎Looking forward over the next 15 years, biochemists aim to achieve several milestones in HIV treatment and cure research.
‎ These include:
‎Developing an effective preventive vaccine using innovative approaches like mRNA technology to stimulate broadly neutralizing antibodies.
‎Creating gene-editing therapies to excise or inactivate HIV DNA reservoirs hidden in infected cells, using methods like CRISPR-Cas9
‎.Designing long-acting injectable treatments or implants to replace daily pills and improve adherence.
‎Achieving a functional cure where HIV is controlled without ongoing treatments etc

Scientists have successfully restored hearing in people born with genetic deafness by correcting a single defective gene through viral gene therapy. The treatment uses a harmless, engineered virus to deliver a healthy copy of the gene directly into the inner ear. Once there, it reactivates dormant cells responsible for detecting sound—effectively reversing a condition once thought permanent.

Early trials have produced remarkable results: patients who had never heard a sound can now perceive speech, music, and everyday noises. The therapy targets a mutation in the *OTOF* gene, which affects thousands globally. Unlike hearing aids or cochlear implants that merely amplify sound, this approach restores natural hearing by fixing the genetic cause itself.

Researchers believe this achievement marks the start of a new era in curative medicine for hearing loss—one that could eventually replace mechanical solutions with lasting biological restoration. Beyond hearing, the same viral therapy model is being explored for treating blindness, paralysis, and heart disease.

The success of this single-gene correction highlights the immense promise of genetic medicine. It points to a future where many hereditary conditions can be repaired at their source—transforming how we think about disability and human healing.,Genetherapy,healthcare,molecularcrspcase-9, scientist...
