It is very important that the built environment is constructed in a way it can accommodate the special needs of persons living with visual impairment. Environmental modification connotes adapting the environment to suit the needs of persons living with visual impairment, making the environment more accessible and friendly to persons living with visual impairment. Recent studies have shown that architectural barriers have constituted an impediment to the accessibility of public places such as schools, hospitals, worship centers, offices, banks, parks and other public places by persons with visual impairment. It is important to take into consideration the needs of persons living with visual impairment when planning and implementing architectural designs. This would help them to access these places with ease and independently. Provision of ramps would aid the independent travel of people living with visual impairment, covering drainages is also a great measure of employ in modifying the environment for persons living with visual impairment.

In my previous post I made mention that an individual can live with multiple disabilities, yes visual impairment can coexist with orthopedic impairments, which is otherwise referred to as physical impairment.

People use wheelchairs for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to the following:

lack of strength
lack of balance
lack of stamina
pain
different types of plegias
Paraplegia - loss or limited use of two limbs, usually the lower limbs
Quadriplegia - loss or limited use of four limbs. Spastic quadriplegia is a term sometimes used to describe someone who has limitations to all four limbs, but has some use of one or more limbs.
Hemiplegia - loss or limited use of two limbs on the same side of the body (right arm and right leg or left arm and left leg).
People with visual impairment who use wheel chairs can also benefit from orientation and mobility training. Though this is a pain stacking process, it is achievable. They could be trained to navigate their environment independently and gracefully using their wheelchairs and other mobility aid devices such as the white cane.

You can do and be just about anything you want. All you have to do is to believe in yourself and keep pushing. Limitations are abstract and only existing in the mind. Paying little or no attention to your limitations is a huge step towards achieving your goals and aspirations. Being visually impaired should and will not stop you from being the best you can be. You are stronger than you can imagine, you are way above your limitations, believe in yourself.

Deaf blind, just as the name suggests is a disabling condition that affects the visual and auditory senses. Persons who are deaf blind can not perceive and benefit from any visual or auditory stimuli in their environment. Yes it is possible for an individual to have multiple disabling conditions The provision of Orientation and mobility coaching to these category of persons with disabilities is possible, but believe me it's a very slow process that requires a lot of patience on the part of the orientation and mobility coach. In a bid to providing orientation and mobility training services to persons who are deaf blind, one major approach that is employed by the orientation and mobility coach is the "OBJECT CUE" method. In this method, persons who are deaf blind depend largely on their kinesthetic and tactile senses to gather information about their environments. The orientation and mobility coach would have to pair the individual's sense of touch and different objects they want to teach the deaf blind person severally. Object cue is one of the major components of Orientation and mobility training for persons who are visually impaired.
