PLATEAU YOUTH COUNCIL MEETS INEC, ADVOCATES FOR FREE AND FAIR ELECTIONS

Wednesday 22nd October, 2025.

In a deliberate effort to deepen collaboration and promote credible electoral processes, the Plateau State Youth Council (PYC) leadership yesterday paid a courtesy visit to the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of Plateau State, Mallam Mohammed Abubakar Sadeeq.

During the visit, the Chairman of the Youth Council, Comr. Panan Gongden Dapar, reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to fostering unity and peace across the State. He emphasized that since the integrity and outcome of election processes are vital to democracy, it is a civic responsibility of the Plateau State Youth Council to engage constructively with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He stated, “INEC as an institution is very critical to the democratic architecture of Nigeria, particularly here in Plateau State. Its actions or inactions can make or mar our democracy.”

The Chairman warned that any slightest act of suspicious or unlawful behaviour aimed at undermining the electoral process will be firmly and squarely dealt with by the youth. The Council urged all stakeholders to avoid actions that could disrupt the integrity of elections.

Comr. Panan further highlighted the Council’s previous efforts during the last Local Government elections in ensuring that polls were peaceful and devoid of violence. He stressed that young people often play decisive roles, either positively or negatively, during elections, hence the need for INEC to actively involve youth leadership in its plans and preparations.

He appealed for continuous collaboration, urging that the goodwill and commitment of Plateau youths be complemented by INEC’s steadfast adherence to fairness and transparency. He concluded by assuring the REC of the unflinching support of young people across the State in promoting free and fair elections.

In his response, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mallam Mohammed Abubakar Sadeeq, expressed deep appreciation to the Youth Council for the visit. He commended their proactive engagement and assured that, under his leadership, elections in Plateau State will be fair, credible, and transparent.

The REC encouraged the Youth Council to leverage its structures across the State, down to the district levels, to mobilize eligible citizens who have not yet registered to take advantage of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise. He also noted that the transfer of polling units is currently ongoing, with all processes now fully digitized to make participation seamless for Nigerians.

Mallam Sadeeq concluded by reaffirming his readiness to maintain an open-door relationship with the Plateau State Youth Council for continuous partnership in advancing democratic ideals on the Plateau.

PLATEAU STATE YOUTH COUNCIL CONGRATULATES DR. KWANDE SOLOMON DAWAL ON HIS APPOINTMENT AS ACTING DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF PLATEAU STATE CONTRIBUTORY HEALTHCARE MANAGEMENT AGENCY (PLASCHEMA), PRESENTS CONCERNS OF PLATEAU PEOPLE

Saturday 18th October, 2025

In a bid to strengthen collaboration and advance the collective interests of Plateau citizens, the Plateau State Youth Council yesterday 17th October paid a courtesy visit to the Acting Director-General of the Plateau State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (PLASCHEMA), Dr. Kwande Solomon Dawal, at his office in Jos.

Speaking during the visit, the Chairman of the Youth Council, Comrade Panan Gongden Dapar, extended the heartfelt congratulations of Plateau youths to Dr. Dawal. He recalled that PLASCHEMA was an initiative that originated from the Youth Council during the leadership of Dr. Jemchang Yildam Fabong, and expressed delight that a young person who played an instrumental role in its establishment has now been entrusted with its leadership.

Panan encouraged the Acting Director-General to remain steadfast and not disappoint the youths of Plateau, while expressing confidence that he will deliver as the Director-General of the Agency. He further commended PLASCHEMA’s efforts in expanding access to healthcare through insurance but also highlighted certain concerns raised by the public, describing them as constructive feedback meant to improve the Agency’s performance.

Among the issues presented were the need for improved professionalism and attitude among staff which affects the quality of services, enhancement of healthcare facilities, steady availability of medical consumables, and the reconsideration of some former adhoc staff members who had earlier been relieved of their duties.

The Chairman reaffirmed the Council’s continuous support for PLASCHEMA and urged its management to remain proactive and innovative in service delivery.

In his response, Dr. Kwande Solomon Dawal expressed deep appreciation to the Plateau State Youth Council for the visit, describing it as a great honor to be recognized by his own constituency. He acknowledged that the issues raised regarding service quality are critical and assured that the Agency is committed to data-driven decision-making.

According to him, recent research shows a 95% satisfaction rate among clients, though challenges with access to drugs had been noted. He explained that this gap is now being addressed through the accreditation of community pharmacists and the establishment of a dedicated pharmacy to ensure constant drug availability.

Dr. Dawal also revealed that PLASCHEMA is working towards full automation of its processes, noting that premium payments are already automated, with more digital systems soon to follow. He emphasized the Agency’s vision of building a community-based healthcare insurance model that is both people-centered and contextually relevant, adding that the memo for its implementation has already been approved.

Highlight of the visit was a photograph session with management staff and the leadership of the Plateau State Youth Council

PLATEAU STATE YOUTH COUNCIL MEETS COMMISSIONER FOR TOURISM, CULTURE AND HOSPITALITY, DISCUSS UNITY AS TOOL TO MARKET PLATEAU'S RICH CULTURAL HERITAGE AND BOOST TOURISM

13th October, 2025

The Plateau State Youth Council ably led by her Chairman Comrade Panan Gongden Dapar, were on a courtesy visit to the Honourable Commissioner for Tourism, Culture and Hospitality, a strategic engagement aimed at rekindling the spirit of sanity in service and contributing meaningfully to the stability of the polity on the Plateau, held in the Commissioner's Office at the JD Gomwalk State Secretariat Jos.

Panan while stating the purpose of visit noted that as the state’s proud slogan declares, Plateau is indeed the Home of Peace and Tourism, and that the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Hospitality remains central to ensuring this slogan continues to reflect the lived reality of the people. He emphasized that as a state richly blessed with diversity, cultural, ethnic, and political, the Ministry carries a critical responsibility to promote unity, which in turn sustains peace and creates the enabling environment for tourism to flourish.

Comrade Panan seized the opportunity to brief the Honourable Commissioner on the Youth Council’s proposed cultural carnival, slated to hold after the Nigerian University Games (NUGA) at the University of Jos. The event, he explained, is designed to showcase and market the rich cultural heritage of Plateau to the world. He appealed for the Ministry’s support and partnership in actualizing this vision, describing it as an opportunity to further strengthen the state’s tourism brand.

He reaffirmed that the Youth Council remains committed to constructive engagement with government, pledging to commend policies that unite the people while speaking up against those that may divide them. According to him, young people play a vital role in the tourism and hospitality industry and should therefore be carried along in the plans of government for the sector. “We have decided,” he said, “to partner with the Plateau State Government to ensure that the tourism agenda under this administration is fully realized.”

Comrade Panan concluded by commending His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, for his visionary steps in fencing the Jos Wildlife Park and reconstruction of both the Plateau Hotel and the Hill Station Hotel, projects he described as major milestones that will further boost tourism and hospitality in the state.

In his response, the Honourable Commissioner for Tourism, Culture and Hospitality, Hon. Cornelius Doeyok Dongnaan, expressed deep appreciation to the leadership of the Youth Council for the visit. He described it as a great honour that the Council found the Ministry worthy of such a strategic courtesy visit and commended the Council’s commitment to the development of Plateau.

The Commissioner reaffirmed that Governor Mutfwang is deeply intentional about repositioning the tourism and hospitality sector, as reflected in the ongoing revitalization projects at the Plateau Hotel, Hill Station Hotel, and the Jos Wildlife Park amongst others. He further disclosed that December has been officially designated as the Month of Tourism in Plateau State, a period that will celebrate the state’s natural beauty, culture, and people.

Hon. Dongnaan, however, stressed the need for Plateau citizens to take ownership of their narrative and tell their own stories, cautioning against allowing others to define the state for profit-driven objectives. He praised the creativity, talent, and industry of Plateau youths and emphasized that there is much more that can be achieved through collaboration between government and young people.

He revealed that through the Ministry, Governor Mutfwang is also taking deliberate steps to recreate the state’s collective identity. This includes the Governor’s approval for a Plateau Unity Attire Day, the hosting of a State Festival of Arts and Culture, and the development of a harmonized cultural festival calendar for the state’s diverse ethnic groups, all aimed at boosting cultural pride, promoting unity, and increasing revenue generation through tourism.

Concluding, the Commissioner pledged his full support for the proposed Youth Council Carnival and expressed his willingness to maintain an open door for constructive engagements and partnerships that add value to the state and its people.

GIRLS OF PLATEAU; SHINING PATHS TO TOMORROW
A MESSAGE FROM THE PLATEAU STATE YOUTH COUNCIL ON THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF GIRL CHILD

Saturday 11th October, 2025

As the Plateau Youth Council, we write today with pride, passion, and a deep sense of responsibility to mark the International Day of the Girl Child. We speak on behalf of the vibrant, dynamic, and determined young people of Plateau State, Nigeria, committed to championing the cause of our girls.

We walk through the bustling streets of Jos, the cultural landscapes of Bokkos, and the communities of Pankshin, recalling the laughter of girls in school uniforms, their curious eyes devouring books, and their dreams stretching far beyond the picturesque hills of Plateau. These are the girls breaking barriers in tech hubs where they code innovations, on sports fields where they chase victories, and in community halls where they lead with conviction – proudly representing Plateau on local and national platforms.

But as we celebrate their triumphs, we also acknowledge the paths they tread aren't always easy. In some villages of Plateau, traditions whisper limitations; in urban areas like Jos Metropolis, opportunities sometimes seem skewed. Girls face headwinds gender biases that question their capabilities, gaps in access to quality education especially in hard-to-reach areas, and safety concerns that shadow their steps.

Yet, in the face of these challenges, the spirit of girls in Plateau shines like the Shere Hills sunrise resilient and hopeful. They are innovators solving problems that affect us all; leaders inspiring change with courage and compassion; dreamers shaping tomorrow with creativity and grit.

This is why, as the Plateau Youth Council, we see this day as a call to action. We envision a world where every girl in our state can pursue her passion without boundaries, where her voice is heard, and her potential is nurtured. We believe in investing in girls' education because it's a gateway to unlocking limitless opportunities. We champion gender equality, challenging stereotypes that hold back progress. We advocate for mentorship, pairing girls with role models who light the way. And we lift their voices hearing their stories, amplifying their ideas, celebrating their aspirations.

Girls are the heartbeat of our communities in Plateau. Their empowerment is our collective gain. As we mark this International Day of the Girl Child in Plateau State, the Plateau Youth Council recommits to being allies in their journey creating spaces where they can thrive, dream big, and lead with confidence.

In the villages and towns of Plateau, let's nurture this promise together. For every girl empowered is a future brightened; for every barrier broken, a pathway widened. Let's walk this path with them, believing that together, we can build a brighter tomorrow for girls in Plateau State and beyond.
