PLATEAU STATE YOUTH COUNCIL MEETS COMMISSIONER FOR TOURISM, CULTURE AND HOSPITALITY, DISCUSS UNITY AS TOOL TO MARKET PLATEAU'S RICH CULTURAL HERITAGE AND BOOST TOURISM
13th October, 2025
The Plateau State Youth Council ably led by her Chairman Comrade Panan Gongden Dapar, were on a courtesy visit to the Honourable Commissioner for Tourism, Culture and Hospitality, a strategic engagement aimed at rekindling the spirit of sanity in service and contributing meaningfully to the stability of the polity on the Plateau, held in the Commissioner's Office at the JD Gomwalk State Secretariat Jos.
Panan while stating the purpose of visit noted that as the state’s proud slogan declares, Plateau is indeed the Home of Peace and Tourism, and that the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Hospitality remains central to ensuring this slogan continues to reflect the lived reality of the people. He emphasized that as a state richly blessed with diversity, cultural, ethnic, and political, the Ministry carries a critical responsibility to promote unity, which in turn sustains peace and creates the enabling environment for tourism to flourish.
Comrade Panan seized the opportunity to brief the Honourable Commissioner on the Youth Council’s proposed cultural carnival, slated to hold after the Nigerian University Games (NUGA) at the University of Jos. The event, he explained, is designed to showcase and market the rich cultural heritage of Plateau to the world. He appealed for the Ministry’s support and partnership in actualizing this vision, describing it as an opportunity to further strengthen the state’s tourism brand.
He reaffirmed that the Youth Council remains committed to constructive engagement with government, pledging to commend policies that unite the people while speaking up against those that may divide them. According to him, young people play a vital role in the tourism and hospitality industry and should therefore be carried along in the plans of government for the sector. “We have decided,” he said, “to partner with the Plateau State Government to ensure that the tourism agenda under this administration is fully realized.”
Comrade Panan concluded by commending His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, for his visionary steps in fencing the Jos Wildlife Park and reconstruction of both the Plateau Hotel and the Hill Station Hotel, projects he described as major milestones that will further boost tourism and hospitality in the state.
In his response, the Honourable Commissioner for Tourism, Culture and Hospitality, Hon. Cornelius Doeyok Dongnaan, expressed deep appreciation to the leadership of the Youth Council for the visit. He described it as a great honour that the Council found the Ministry worthy of such a strategic courtesy visit and commended the Council’s commitment to the development of Plateau.
The Commissioner reaffirmed that Governor Mutfwang is deeply intentional about repositioning the tourism and hospitality sector, as reflected in the ongoing revitalization projects at the Plateau Hotel, Hill Station Hotel, and the Jos Wildlife Park amongst others. He further disclosed that December has been officially designated as the Month of Tourism in Plateau State, a period that will celebrate the state’s natural beauty, culture, and people.
Hon. Dongnaan, however, stressed the need for Plateau citizens to take ownership of their narrative and tell their own stories, cautioning against allowing others to define the state for profit-driven objectives. He praised the creativity, talent, and industry of Plateau youths and emphasized that there is much more that can be achieved through collaboration between government and young people.
He revealed that through the Ministry, Governor Mutfwang is also taking deliberate steps to recreate the state’s collective identity. This includes the Governor’s approval for a Plateau Unity Attire Day, the hosting of a State Festival of Arts and Culture, and the development of a harmonized cultural festival calendar for the state’s diverse ethnic groups, all aimed at boosting cultural pride, promoting unity, and increasing revenue generation through tourism.
Concluding, the Commissioner pledged his full support for the proposed Youth Council Carnival and expressed his willingness to maintain an open door for constructive engagements and partnerships that add value to the state and its people.
