🩺 MKR Care➕ Pharmacy Health Alert: Major Side Effects of Antiulcer Medications
Antiulcer medications such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), H2 blockers, antacids, and mucosal protectants are widely used to treat ulcers, acid reflux, and related stomach conditions. Though effective, some important side effects should be known:
Key Major Side Effects:
- Increased risk of bone fractures with long-term use of PPIs due to decreased calcium absorption
- Vitamin B12 deficiency from reduced stomach acid with prolonged therapy
- Higher susceptibility to gut infections like Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) from acid suppression
- Kidney issues including acute interstitial nephritis with prolonged use
- Sexual side effects mainly linked to cimetidine (an H2 blocker), including:
- Decreased libido (lowered sexual desire)
- Erectile dysfunction in men
- Rare gynecomastia (enlargement of male breast tissue)
Additional Notes by Medication Type:
- PPIs (e.g., omeprazole, lansoprazole): Commonly mild gastrointestinal issues; serious long-term risks involve bone density and infections.
- H2 blockers (e.g., cimetidine, famotidine): Mild GI symptoms plus rare hormonal effects causing sexual side effects.
- Mucosal protectants (e.g., sucralfate): Mostly constipation as a side effect.
- Antacids (e.g., aluminum hydroxide): Can cause constipation and mineral imbalances if used excessively.
Safety Tips:
- Take medications exactly as prescribed.
- Discuss any concerns or side effects with your healthcare provider.
- Do not discontinue medication without consulting a professional.
- Ask about alternatives if troublesome side effects occur.
