Dear NAPE Members,

The Nigerian Association of Professional Epidemiologists (NAPE) has been alerted to misleading communications from an entity calling itself the "African Institute of Public Health Professionals" (AIPHP), offering inductions or certifications for Diploma Holders in Epidemiology and Disease Control.

We wish to categorically state that:
1. This institute is NOT recognized by NAPE, the Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON), or any official public health regulatory body in Nigeria.
2. EHCON remains the ONLY legally recognized regulatory body for the accreditation, certification and Licensing of Diploma programs in Epidemiology and Disease Control in Nigeria.
3. Any certification or induction issued by this unrecognized organization has no legal or professional standing and should be disregarded.

NAPE advises all members and stakeholders to:
✔ Only engage with EHCON-approved programs(ND/HND) for professional certification in Epidemiology and Disease Control.
✔ Report any suspicious or unauthorized certification schemes to the NAPE Secretary

For further clarification, please contact: Me or Secretary general Habib Surajo Gwaram.
Stay vigilant and uphold the integrity of our profession.

Best regards,
Comr. Abubakar I.M Maiyaki
National President
Nigerian Association of Professional Epidemiologists (NAPE)

THERE IS MYSTERIOUS OUTBREAK OF DANCING DISEASE CALLED (DINGA-DINGA) IN BUNDIBUGYO, UGANDA

A mysterious illness called "Dinga Dinga" has affected women and girls in Uganda's Bundibugyo district.

The disease causes high fever and uncontrollable shaking, described as "shaking like dancing."

Current Situation. About 300 cases have been reported. No deaths have occurred. The disease is limited to Bundibugyo district.

Dr. Kiyita Christopher, the district health officer, said: "Herbal medicine cannot treat this disease. We use specific treatments, and patients recover within a week. I urge locals to seek care at health facilities."

Samples from patients have been sent to Uganda's health ministry. The cause of the disease has not been identified.

Historical Connection. The outbreak is compared to the "Dancing Plague of 1518" in Strasbourg, where people danced uncontrollably for days without a clear cause.

Health Challenges in Uganda has a high maternal mortality rate of 440 deaths per 100,000 live births, according to the WHO. Common causes include unsafe abortion, severe bleeding, infections, hypertension, and pregnancy-related illnesses like malaria and anemia. Despite these challenges, progress has been made. In 2021, women in Uganda had a healthy life expectancy of 58.9 years, up 15.4 years since 2000.
