NOTIFICATION TO HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS AND ENROLLEES

The Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA) hereby notifies all healthcare providers and enrollees that the Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital (MAWTH) is currently undergoing renovation.

To ensure uninterrupted access to quality healthcare services during this period, the following temporary service arrangements have been made:

Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology has been relocated to Imam Wali General Hospital.

Department of Paediatrics has been relocated to Khalifa Sheikh Isyaka Rabiu Paediatric Hospital.

The KSCHMA Clinic at MAWTH remains fully operational and will continue to provide services under the Contributory Healthcare Scheme.

All healthcare providers are kindly requested to guide enrollees accordingly, while enrollees are advised to take note of these interim measures. These arrangements are designed to guarantee continued access to essential healthcare services without disruption.

KSCHMA sincerely appreciates the patience, understanding, and cooperation of both healthcare providers and enrollees during this renovation period.

Kano State Charts New Path for Budget Reforms, KSCHMA and Health Agencies Reaffirm Commitment to Sustainability

The Kano State Ministry of Health, in collaboration with Results for Development (R4D) and development partners, has convened the Budget Process Reforms (BPR) Handover and Sustainability Plan Development Meeting at Comfort Hub Hotel, Kano. The meeting brought together senior government officials, technical experts, civil society, and health agencies to review the achievements of the BPR project and adopt a sustainability framework for consolidating reforms in the health sector.

The event recorded strong participation from the State Ministry of Health, its agencies including the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA), and development partners—reflecting a united commitment to transparency, accountability, and improved service delivery. The KSCHMA officials were led by Dr. Musbahu Maimashi, who represented the Executive Secretary and reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to sustaining reforms in health financing and service delivery.

In his opening remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Pharmacist Aminu Bashir, representing the Honourable Commissioner of Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf praised stakeholders for their support in driving reforms and strengthening accountability in Kano State.

Delivering a goodwill message, the Federal Ministry of Health representative applauded Kano State for setting a national example in institutionalizing budget reforms and pledged continued federal support for subnational transparency and sustainability in health financing.

The R4D representative highlighted the journey of the BPR project, stressing the need to embed reforms within government systems for long-term impact. He reaffirmed R4D’s commitment to building state capacity and promoting inclusive, sustainable reforms.

Participants reviewed key milestones of the BPR project, including analyses, policy briefs, and knowledge products developed in 2023 and 2025. Members of the Planning and Budgeting Committee and planning cells also shared experiences and lessons learned.

A central highlight of the meeting was the Sustainability Planning Workshop, where participants designed strategies around five thematic areas: institutionalization of reforms; capacity transfer and committee strengthening; financing continuity; knowledge management; and gender inclusion. The workshop ended with the adoption of action points to ensure reforms are sustained beyond the project cycle.

In his closing remarks, Pharmacist Aminu Bashir reaffirmed the state government’s resolve to institutionalize reforms for better health outcomes and commended KSCHMA and sister agencies for their active role in the process.

The Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA) has strengthened its commitment to expanding quality healthcare access with the successful hosting of its Third Quarter 2025 Engagement Meeting with Stakeholders of Public Health Facilities, held at Bon Hotel, Nasarawa GRA, Kano.

The meeting brought together stakeholders from public health facilities and development partners to review progress, share insights, and explore innovative approaches to drive the contributory healthcare agenda.

Declaring the meeting open, the Executive Secretary of KSCHMA, Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar, represented by the Director of Administration, Amina Sani Usman, emphasized the Agency’s mission, stating:

“Our vision is to build a sustainable healthcare financing system that guarantees equity and access for all residents of Kano State. This engagement is not just a meeting but a platform for collaboration, innovation, and accountability in driving universal health coverage.”

The engagement was designed to achieve key objectives, including:

Strengthening partnerships between KSCHMA and public healthcare facilities for quality service delivery under the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Scheme.

Exploring innovations to improve healthcare provision, with emphasis on referral systems and claims management.

Delivering goodwill messages, the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) and NHIA commended KSCHMA’s leadership in healthcare digitalization, claims management, and inclusive contributory programmes

Technical sessions featured presentations on the role of Desk Officers, an overview of SCHEP, data management in claims, and an introduction to KSCHMA’s Primary Services Digitalization Portal, delivered in partnership with Exaro. The highlight of the day was a hands-on training session, equipping participants with practical skills to operate the digitalized portal for primary healthcare services.

Interactive discussions and Q&A sessions allowed participants to share experiences, challenges, and recommendations, further enriching the engagement.

The event concluded with stakeholders pledging stronger collaboration with KSCHMA to ensure healthcare in Kano remains accessible, affordable, and sustainable for all residents.

The Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA) has continued its Quarter Two (Q2) Joint Supportive Supervision (JSS) across public and private healthcare facilities in Kano State, reinforcing its commitment to strengthening healthcare quality and accountability.

On Day 3 of the exercise, the Joint Supervision Teams visited additional health facilities, engaging healthcare workers on adherence to quality standards, clinical protocols, infection prevention and control measures, and proper data management practices. The exercise also provided hands-on mentoring and technical guidance to strengthen documentation, reporting, and internal quality assurance systems.

The teams are composed of representatives from KSCHMA, the Kano State Ministry of Health, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), the Private Health Institutions Management Agency (PHIMA), the Hospitals Management Board (HMB), the Primary Healthcare Management Board (PHCMB), the Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN), the National Association of Nurses and Midwifery (NANNM), the Office of the Head of Service, and the Kano State Anti-Corruption Commission.

The ongoing supervision reflects a coordinated, multi-agency commitment to addressing service delivery gaps and building a healthcare system that is efficient, transparent, and responsive to the needs of the people of Kano State.

Nigeria at 65: KSCHMA Hails Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s Landmark Healthcare Reforms

The Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA) has commended the Executive Governor of Kano State, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to advancing healthcare delivery, as Nigeria marks its 65th Independence Anniversary.

In a statement, the Executive Secretary of KSCHMA, Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar, highlighted the Governor’s landmark interventions, including the launch of the AbbaCare Scheme, provision of free maternal care across health facilities, the Students Contributory Healthcare Programme (SCHEP) for tertiary students, and the enrollment of inmates across custodial centres, Almajiri pupils, and people with special needs into the contributory health scheme.

She also noted that 484 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) have been digitized, while Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) have been introduced at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital and Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital, marking a significant step forward in modernizing healthcare delivery in the state.

“Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has set a new standard in inclusive healthcare. Through AbbaCare, free maternal care, SCHEP, custodial and special group enrollments, as well as the digitization of PHCs and the introduction of electronic medical records, Kano State is taking bold steps toward universal health coverage and modern, efficient healthcare access,” Dr. Muktar said.

She reaffirmed KSCHMA’s commitment to consolidating these gains in partnership with the state government, healthcare providers, and development partners, while urging citizens to support ongoing reforms that place healthcare at the heart of social and economic progress.

Dr. Muktar further called on people living with sickle cell anaemia to take their National Identification Number (NIN) to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Khalifa Isiyaka Rabiu Paediatric Hospital, and Hasiya Bayero Paediatric Hospital to access free medication under the Governor’s healthcare intervention programs.

“At 65, Nigeria needs leaders who put people first. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s health agenda is proof that with compassion and vision, we can build a healthier future for every citizen,” Dr. Muktar concluded.

The Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA) has continued its Quarter Two (Q2) Joint Supportive Supervision (JSS), with multiple teams visiting additional public and private healthcare facilities across the state.

Day 2 of the exercise witnessed inspections at WAK Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC), Bebeji General Hospital, Rijiyar Lemo Model PHC, Kadawa PHC, Buda Health Post in Garko, Waziri Shehu Gidado Hospital, Panshekara PHC, Wudil General Hospital, Kurkujawa PHC, and Doguwa General Hospital.

The teams engaged facility staff on service delivery standards, data management, infection prevention and control, and patient care protocols. They also provided on-the-job mentorship, identified operational gaps, and offered practical recommendations to improve healthcare quality.

The Joint Supervision Teams are drawn from KSCHMA, the Kano State Ministry of Health, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), the Private Health Institutions Management Agency (PHIMA), the Hospitals Management Board (HMB), the Primary Healthcare Management Board (PHCMB), the Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN), the Office of the Head of Service, and the Kano State Anti-Corruption Commission.

The Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA) today convened a strategic review meeting at the Islamic Forum Conference Hall to assess progress on the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) enrolment exercise and address challenges linked to the National Identification Number (NIN) requirement.

The meeting brought together KSCHMA management, Liaison Officers (LOs), and partner stakeholders.

Delivering the opening remark on behalf of the Executive Secretary, the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Sadiq Imam emphasized the agency’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that every eligible citizen is captured under the BHCPF scheme. He noted that the NIN requirement is a critical step in strengthening transparency and accountability.

Updates on enrolment across Local Government Areas (LGAs) were presented by Salisu Musa, highlighting significant progress but also pointing out disparities that require urgent attention. Together with Aliyu Idris, he also outlined the gaps identified in NIN compliance and the pressing need for enhanced collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).

In her moderation of the plenary discussion, Dr. Jamila Mustapha guided participants through robust deliberations on practical solutions. Recommendations included:

Intensified collaboration with NIMC to fast-track NIN registration for enrollees.

Expanded community sensitization campaigns to improve awareness of the NIN requirement.

Strengthened monitoring at the LGA level to track enrolment performance.

At the close of the meeting, participants resolved to implement these steps immediately to ensure seamless BHCPF enrolment and sustained access to healthcare services.

KSCHMA reaffirmed its commitment to expanding healthcare access for all Kano residents, ensuring that no one is left behind due to administrative barriers.

KSCHMA Embarks on Multi-Agency Joint Supportive Supervision to Strengthen Healthcare Quality in Kano State

The Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA) has officially kick-started its Quarter Two (Q2) Joint Supportive Supervision (JSS) across both public and private healthcare facilities in Kano State.

The exercise commenced with an orientation meeting held at the Agency’s Conference Room, setting the stage for a coordinated, multi-agency approach to strengthening healthcare quality and service delivery across the state.

The supportive supervision exercise is designed to:

Verify adherence to established quality standards and clinical protocols.

Identify weaknesses in service delivery, infrastructure, data management, and infection prevention and control (IPC).

Provide on-the-job mentoring, training, and technical support to facility staff.

Strengthen documentation, reporting, and internal quality assurance mechanisms within health facilities.

Improve collaboration and feedback between health facilities and KSCHMA for better resource allocation and accountability.

The Joint Supervision Team comprises representatives from KSCHMA, the Kano State Ministry of Health, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), the Private Health Institutions Management Agency (PHIMA), the Hospitals Management Board (HMB), the Primary Healthcare Management Board (PHCMB), the Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN), the Office of the Head of Service, and the Kano State Anti-Corruption Commission.

As part of the kick-off activities, the supervision teams visited a number of health facilities on the first day, including:

Kofar Fada Primary Health Centre, Wudil

Dawakin Gulu facility, Rimin Gado

Minjibir General Hospital

Rogo General Hospital

Sumaila General Hospital

Gaya General Hospital

Yankau Primary Health Centre, Gaya

At each site, the supervision team engaged healthcare staff on best practices, identified gaps in service delivery, and provided on-the-job mentorship and guidance to strengthen the quality of care.

The commencement of the JSS exercise represents a significant step in KSCHMA’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that healthcare providers under the scheme consistently meet quality benchmarks, thereby contributing to the delivery of effective, transparent, and sustainable healthcare services in Kano State.
