Accelerating Action for Women’s Health: KSCHMA Marks International Women’s Day 2026 with Renewed Commitment to Inclusive Contributory Healthcare

8 March 2026

The Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA) has joined the global community in commemorating International Women’s Day 2026, themed “Accelerate Action.” The Agency used the occasion to reaffirm its commitment to expanding access to quality healthcare services for women and girls across Kano State.

Speaking during the commemoration, the Executive Secretary of KSCHMA, Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar, emphasized that women’s health remains a key priority under the inclusive healthcare policy direction of the Executive Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Dr. Muktar noted that this year’s theme highlights the urgent need for governments, institutions, and communities to intensify efforts toward improving the wellbeing and empowerment of women, particularly through access to quality healthcare services.

“The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day, Accelerate Action, strongly aligns with our mission at KSCHMA. It calls for deliberate and sustained efforts to improve the health and wellbeing of women. Through the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Scheme, we are expanding access to essential healthcare services for women, especially pregnant mothers and vulnerable groups,” she stated.

She explained that the Agency continues to intensify enrollment into the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Scheme, with particular focus on pregnant women, widows, orphans, and other vulnerable populations. Access to antenatal care, skilled birth attendance, and other maternal health services remains central to KSCHMA’s strategy to reduce maternal mortality and improve health outcomes across the state.

According to her, these initiatives align directly with the healthcare reform agenda of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, whose administration prioritizes inclusive healthcare coverage and strengthened health systems to ensure equitable access to healthcare services for all residents of Kano State.

Dr. Muktar further called on families and communities to support women—especially expectant mothers—to seek early antenatal care and take advantage of the opportunities provided under the state’s contributory healthcare programme.

“Healthy mothers build healthy families, and healthy families build a stronger Kano. We encourage communities to support women in accessing healthcare services early and consistently,” she added.

KSCHMA reaffirmed its commitment to working with healthcare providers, community leaders, development partners, and civil society organizations to strengthen women-centered healthcare delivery across Kano State.

Mal. Acting under the directive of the Executive Secretary, Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar, the Team ensured proper referral coordination and continuous follow-up throughout his treatment process.

Following comprehensive pre-operative evaluation and medical stabilization, surgeons at the facility successfully conducted the hernia repair procedure. He is currently recovering in stable condition under close post-operative supervision and is expected to make a full recovery.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf Strengthens Sickle Cell Care Through KSCHMA Rapid Response Nutritional Intervention

3rd March 2026

The Kano State Government, under the leadership of His Excellency Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has reinforced its commitment to comprehensive healthcare delivery with a targeted nutritional intervention for sickle cell patients across the state.

Acting on the directive of the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA), Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar, the Agency’s Rapid Response Team (RRT) distributed fortified pap (Garin Kunu) to patients receiving care at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital and Khalifa Sheikh Isyaka Rabiu Paediatric Hospital. The Team was accompanied by the Chief Medical Officers (CMOs) of both facilities to ensure coordinated delivery and clinical oversight.

Representing the Executive Secretary, the Director of Administration and General Services, Amina Sani Usman, highlighted that the initiative underscores KSCHMA’s proactive, patient-centered approach to healthcare.

She noted that sickle cell disorder requires an integrated management plan that combines clinical care with sustained nutritional support. Patients are highly susceptible to anemia, recurrent infections, and painful crises, making proper nutrition essential for recovery and overall well-being.

“The Rapid Response Team, working closely with the hospitals’ CMOs, was mobilized to complement ongoing clinical care with immediate nutritional support, ensuring that patients receive holistic treatment that addresses both medical and dietary needs,” she said.

The fortified Garin Kunu provided under this intervention is specifically formulated to enhance nutritional intake, strengthen immunity, and support growth and resilience—particularly among pediatric patients.

By extending this intervention to two key referral hospitals in Kano State, the Government demonstrates operational agility, institutional coordination, and unwavering commitment to vulnerable populations living with chronic health conditions.

This initiative is part of the broader health sector reform agenda of the present administration, which prioritizes quality service delivery, improved patient outcomes, and equitable access to healthcare services across the state.

The Kano State Government remains steadfast in safeguarding the health and dignity of all citizens through responsive, inclusive, and sustainable healthcare interventions.

The meeting was chaired by the Executive Secretary of KSCHMA, Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar, who was represented by Dr. Jamila Mustapha. 26th February 2026

In a powerful demonstration of responsive and inclusive healthcare delivery, the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA), through its Rapid Response Team (RRT), has facilitated urgent specialist medical care for two vulnerable children with complex health conditions, reaffirming the Agency’s commitment to protecting Kano State’s most at-risk populations.

Under the directive of the Executive Secretary, Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar, five-year-old Hibbatullah Ibrahim, a female child living with forelimb and hindlimb paralysis associated with a congenital syndrome, is currently receiving structured physiotherapy care at Khalifa Sheikh Isyaku Rabiu Pediatric Hospital. The therapy, delivered as part of a multidisciplinary plan, aims to improve her mobility, strengthen her limbs, and enhance overall quality of life, with regular monitoring and rehabilitation sessions ensuring sustained medical support.

Infant Usman Abduljabbar, a male child diagnosed with spina bifida and hernia, has been referred by the KSCHMA Rapid Response Team to Khalifa Sheikh Isyaku Rabiu Pediatric Hospital for specialist assessment and intervention. The referral ensures timely access to diagnostic evaluations, surgical planning, and appropriate treatment to prevent further health complications and safeguard his development.

KSCHMA & DMCSA Launch Groundbreaking Direct Drug Procurement Reform Framework

26th February 2026

The Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA), in partnership with the Drugs and Medical Consumables Supply Agency (DMCSA), has formally received the Final Report and Strategic Framework of the Advisory Committee on Direct Drug Procurement Reform. This milestone marks a major step toward eliminating recurring drug stockouts across accredited public health facilities in Kano State.

The report was presented at a high-level session held at the KSCHMA Conference Hall, attended by senior management and committee members. The reform initiative is designed to strengthen drug availability, improve supply chain efficiency, and ensure that enrollees consistently access quality-assured medicines.

In her remarks, the Executive Secretary of KSCHMA, Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar, described the reform as a strategic intervention addressing systemic challenges such as fragmented procurement processes, fund diversion risks, and inadequate medicine supply. She emphasized that the initiative aligns with the health transformation agenda of the Kano State Government and underscores KSCHMA’s commitment to uninterrupted access to essential drugs.

The Director General of DMCSA, Pharmacist Gali Sule, highlighted that the framework provides an evidence-based, implementation-ready roadmap to strengthen centralized procurement, enhance accountability, and ensure coordinated distribution of medicines to all accredited facilities.

A key recommendation of the Committee is the direct disbursement of 70% of capitation funds to DMCSA to facilitate coordinated procurement and reliable drug supply. This measure is expected to enhance transparency, reduce inefficiencies, and guarantee uninterrupted access to essential medicines for KSCHMA enrollees statewide.

The Advisory Committee, organized through a multisectoral structure, conducted extensive data reviews and stakeholder consultations to develop the reform framework and implementation roadmap.

The formal handover marks the transition from policy development to ex*****on, with both agencies committing to phased implementation, continuous monitoring, and active stakeholder engagement to ensure sustainability and measurable impact.

The Direct Drug Procurement Reform represents a decisive step in strengthening Kano State’s health insurance system, safeguarding public funds, and enhancing service delivery for citizens.

From Crisis to Hope: KSCHMA Rapid Response Team Secures Critical Care and Surgical Interventions for Vulnerable Patients in Kano

25th February 2026

The Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA), through its Rapid Response Team (RRT), has facilitated life-saving medical interventions for three vulnerable patients in Kano State, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to inclusive and equitable healthcare delivery.

Mal. Haruna Ya’u, who has been battling a severe hernia condition, was referred to Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital for specialist evaluation. Following clinical assessment, he is currently on medication and scheduled for surgical repair in the coming weeks, in line with medical advice.

At the same facility, Khadija Ali, who suffered a hypertensive attack, is undergoing intensive medical management and close monitoring to stabilize her condition and prevent further complications.

In a more complex case, Umar Abdullahi sustained a serious leg fracture and was initially hospitalized but absconded due to financial constraints. The untreated fracture subsequently deteriorated, developing an infected wound with discharge that made immediate orthopedic surgery medically unsafe.

Upon KSCHMA’s intervention, Umar was reassessed by Dr. Hussain Muhammad, Chief Medical Director of Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital. He was placed on medication and closely monitored for eight weeks to manage the infection and promote wound healing. Following successful recovery and clinical clearance, he is now scheduled to undergo orthopedic surgery, with the Rapid Response Team facilitating the required implant to ensure optimal surgical outcome.

These coordinated interventions align with the healthcare reform vision of His Excellency, Abba Kabir Yusuf, whose Inclusive Healthcare Policy prioritizes financial risk protection, strengthened referral systems, and access to quality medical services for vulnerable populations. The initiative reflects the State Government’s determination to remove economic barriers and ensure that no resident is denied essential treatment due to financial hardship.

Speaking on the development, the Executive Secretary of KSCHMA, Dr. Rahila Aliyu Muktar, emphasized that the Rapid Response Team remains committed to emergency referrals, sustained patient follow-up, and comprehensive care coordination across tertiary facilities in the State.

KSCHMA will continue to monitor the patients’ progress to ensure full recovery, reaffirming its mandate to deliver people-centered and accountable healthcare services across Kano State.
