The documentary in question is Root Cause, which premiered on Netflix on January 1, 2019. It promoted the long-discredited idea that root canals can lead to systemic diseases—including cancer—and made specific claims such as “97% of patients with breast cancer had a root canal on the same side as the cancer.” These assertions were swiftly denounced by the American Dental Association, the American Association of Endodontists and other professional bodies as “significant misinformation” not supported by any valid scientific evidence.

Netflix quietly removed Root Cause less than one month after its January 2019 release, following private letters from multiple dental associations warning that the film could “harm the viewing public by spreading long-disproven claims”.

Wisdom teeth—our third molars—are the last to erupt, often between ages 17 to 25. But in nearly 7 out of 10 people, they become impacted or misaligned, causing more harm than good.

Here’s why their removal is often necessary:

1. Impacted Eruption
When there’s not enough room in the jaw, wisdom teeth get trapped under the gums or push sideways. This can lead to jaw stiffness, persistent pain, and gum swelling.

2. Infection Risk (Pericoronitis)
Partially erupted third molars are a breeding ground for bacteria. This can cause pericoronitis—a painful infection that may recur and spread to surrounding tissues.

3. Damage to Second Molars
Tilted or horizontally impacted wisdom teeth exert pressure on the second molars, wearing down enamel and increasing the risk of decay, pulpitis, or root resorption.

4. Jaw Pathologies
Cysts or tumors may develop around impacted teeth, damaging nearby bone and nerves. Early removal avoids such rare but serious complications.

5. Preventing Orthodontic Relapse
Even asymptomatic wisdom teeth can push adjacent teeth, risking relapse after orthodontic treatment.

Routine panoramic X-rays and clinical exams during adolescence help detect complications early—ensuring timely and safer removal.
Preventative extraction is not always cosmetic—it's a clinical decision to protect long-term oral health.
