Let’s talk about LENGTH RETENTION πŸ’†
A lot of us say β€œmy hair doesn’t grow” β€” but most times, it is growing, we’re just not keeping the length.

✨ Length retention simply means holding on to the hair you’ve already grown by preventing breakage.
Hair grows from the scalp, but length is lost at the ends.

So how do you retain length?
✨ Moisture is non-negotiable
Dry hair breaks easily. Moisturiser regularly and always seal with an oil or butter.
✨ Be gentle with your hair
Rough detangling, tight styles and over-manipulation will steal your length.
✨ Protect your ends
Ends are the oldest part of your hair. Tuck them away in low-tension styles and trim when necessary.
✨ Consistency beats products
You don’t need 20 products β€” you need a routine you actually follow.
✨ Healthy scalp + healthy ends = retained length

Growth happens at the scalp, retention happens at the ends. You need both.
Length retention is not a miracle is a habit.

Protein treatments for natural hair are usually made with ingredients that strengthen the hair shaft, repair damage, and reduce breakage. Here are some common ingredients used:

Natural protein-rich ingredients:

Eggs – packed with protein, helps strengthen weak hair.

Greek yogurt / plain yogurt – contains protein and lactic acid, softens while repairing.

Mayonnaise – has eggs and oils, provides both protein and moisture.

Avocado – rich in amino acids and healthy fats.

Gelatin – hydrolyzed protein that binds to hair strands, making them stronger.

Herbal and plant-based sources:

Fenugreek seeds – high in protein and nicotinic acid for hair growth and strength.

Henna (neutral henna or cassia) – strengthens and thickens strands.

Moringa powder – contains amino acids, vitamins, and minerals.

Oils & butters (protein-friendly blends):

Coconut oil – helps reduce protein loss from hair.

Shea butter (mixed with protein sources) – protects and nourishes while sealing.

Store-bought proteins often added to DIY or commercial treatments:

Hydrolyzed keratin

Hydrolyzed wheat protein

Hydrolyzed silk protein

Collagen

πŸ‘‰ A good protein treatment usually balances strength (protein) with moisture (oils, aloe vera, honey, etc.) so the hair doesn’t feel hard or brittle.

To achieve your goals you need to work hard

One of my hair growth challenge participants asked how she can identify her hair type, especially after our conversation on hair typing.

So let’s break it down simply πŸ‘‡πŸ½

Hair typing is based on two things:
β€’ Hair texture
β€’ Coil (curl) pattern

For the pure African race, our hair generally falls under Type 4 hair, which is the coiliest and kinkiest hair type.

Under Type 4, we have three sub-types:
β€’ 4A visible coils with a defined pattern
β€’ 4B tighter coils with a zig-zag pattern
β€’ 4C very tight coils with little or no visible pattern

This picture is one of the best visual illustrations you can use to identify where your hair falls.
Healthy hair growth starts with understanding your hair.
