FDA is warning consumers and health care providers that the agency has seen a sharp increase in hand sanitizer products that are labeled to contain ethanol (also known as ethyl alcohol) but that have tested positive for methanol contamination.

Methanol, or wood alcohol, is a substance that can be toxic when absorbed through the skin or ingested and can be life-threatening when ingested.

The agency is aware of adults and children ingesting hand sanitizer products contaminated with methanol that has led to recent adverse events including blindness, hospitalizations and death.

The Nigerian Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) also reported that 63% of hand sanitizers used in Abuja are fake.
According to the Federal Ministry of Health, one should check the following before buying a hand sanitizer:

▪️Check if the hand sanitizer has a manufacture date and an expiry date.
▪️Check if it contains at least 60% alcohol.
▪️ Check if it has a NAFDAC registration number.
▪️ Check if the label is authentic.

A major breakthrough in our fight against COVID!

In March of this year, RECOVERY was established as a randomised clinical trial to test a range of potential treatments for COVID-19, including low-dose dexamethasone (a steroid treatment). Over 11,500 patients have been enrolled from over 175 NHS hospitals in the UK.

For patients on ventilators, dexamethasone was shown to reduce mortality by about one third, and for patients requiring only oxygen, mortality was cut by about one fifth, according to preliminary findings shared with WHO.

NIGERIAN DOCTORS GO ON STRIKE.

One of the main doctors' unions in Nigeria says its members will go ahead with a strike from Monday over poor pay and a lack of personal protective equipment for health workers.

The Association of Resident Doctors says they will stop providing all services including emergency care and coronavirus treatment.

The union's president, Aliyu Sokomba, said the government had failed to respond to the doctors' demands, including a call for extra payment to reflect the increased risk they faced during the pandemic.

Nigeria has recorded more than 15,000 cases of Covid-19 and more than 400 deaths.

The association represents around a third of Nigeria's doctors.

How to put on and take off a face mask:

For any type of mask, appropriate use and disposal are essential to reduce the risk of transmission
• Check the mask is clean, undamaged and dry before use.
• Clean hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water before putting on a face mask
• Place the mask on, ensuring it fully covers the mouth and nose, and tie securely/place elastic ear loops to minimize any gaps.
• Avoid touching the front of the mask while wearing it, if you do, clean hands with alcohol-based hand sanitizer or wash hands with soap and water.
• Remove the mask by untying from behind or taking off the elastic ear loops. Do not touch the front of the mask.
• After removal or whenever a used mask is inadvertently touched, clean hands using an alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.
• Change masks when they become damp with a new clean, dry mask.
• For non-medical cloth masks, launder thoroughly with hot water and detergent, then either use a hot iron or soak in a mild bleach solution of 0.05% for 10 minutes then rinse before drying in the sun.
• Discard single-use masks after each use responsibly in covered waste bins or bags
• Do not litter the ground with used masks.
• Do not re-use single-use masks.

With covid19 cases still rising, here are a few guidelines on community physical distancing:

Member States, at all levels of government, should maintain and intensify prominent public messaging about individual physical distancing, particularly:

• Use non-contact greetings.

• Practice good hand and respiratory hygiene.

• Enhance environmental hygiene, especially of frequently touched public surfaces (e.g. public and private taps, elevator buttons, handrails, doorknobs, shopping carts, etc.).

• Maintain one metre distance when in public places and where feasible.

• Stay home if you are ill, except to obtain medical care. While at home, wear a medical mask, and isolate yourself from other people in your household as much as possible, especially the elderly or other vulnerable people.
If you need to leave home to seek medical care, you should wear a medical mask, and perform hand hygiene frequently.

You should seek immediate medical care if you have high fever and shortness of breath.
