Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 every year. The day is also known as International Mother Earth Day.

The day is observed to spread awareness about issues, including the rampant increase in pollution, global warming, and deforestation, which harm the environment and result in the destruction of the planet. Countries from all over the world come together to raise awareness about the dire need to protect our environment.

The theme of World Earth Day 2023 is "Invest in Our Planet", calling for businesses to shift towards sustainable practices.

The future of humanity's "lifeblood"—water—is under threat worldwide, the UN secretary-general warned Wednesday at the opening of the global body's first major meeting on water resources in nearly half a century.

"We've broken the water cycle, destroyed ecosystems and contaminated groundwater," Antonio Guterres said at the three-day summit in New York, which gathers some 6,500 participants including a dozen heads of state and government.

"We are draining humanity's lifeblood through vampiric overconsumption and unsustainable use, and evaporating it through global heating," Guterres told the conference.

A report by UN-Water and UNESCO released Tuesday warned of too little or too much water in some places, and contaminated water in others—conditions it said highlight the imminent risk of a global water crisis.

Eco-anxiety also known as Climate Anxiety is the feeling of constant, chronic worry about the effects of climate change on our environment and on future generations which can result in fear, anger, powerlessness, exhaustion, stress or sadness. It is more prevalent among young people and adults.

What triggers climate anxiety?

There appear to be five main causes of heightened climate awareness and anxiety: education, media coverage, having kids, natural disasters, and personal regret.

Who suffers from Eco-anxiety?

Eco-anxiety can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background. However, researchers have found that certain groups are more at risk of eco-anxiety than others. These include young people, indigenous groups, and those who for one reason or another are more connected to the natural environment.

Women also seem to be more likely to experience climate anxiety, although the reason for this is unclear.

What does eco-anxiety feel like?

The mental health effects of eco-anxiety are similar to that of other anxiety disorders. People experiencing climate anxiety often report the following:

- Obsessive or ruminating thoughts
- Feelings of depression, anxiety, or panic attacks
- Guilt about contributing to emissions or carbon footprint
- Pain, anger, or grief over the destruction of natural environments
- Anger with people who don’t understand or deny climate change

Those who have directly or indirectly been affected by an extreme weather event or environmental disaster may also experience symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

DO YOU KNOW THE UNITED NATIONS SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS?

The United Nations (UN) and its members throughout the world are working to accomplish the Sustainable Development Goals in an effort to eradicate poverty, safeguard the environment and the climate, and guarantee that everyone may live in peace and prosperity.

The Sustainable Development objectives cover different apects of social development, environmental protection and economic growth, and these are the main ones:

- The eradication of poverty and hunger so as to ensure a healthy life.

- Achieve universal access to basic services such as water, sanitation and sustainable energy.

- Support the generation of development opportunities through inclusive education and decent work.

- Foster innovation and resilient infrastructures by creating communities and cities capable of producing and consuming in a sustainable way.

- Reduce inequalities in the world, especially gender inequalities.

- Caring for the environment by combating climate change and protecting oceans and terrestrial ecosystems.

- Promote collaboration between different social actors to create an environment of peace and sustainable development.

If we achieve these Sustainable Development Goals among people, governments and companies, we will make the world a more prosperous place for all.

What do you see when you look into the future? I personally don't know how to answer that question. but it doesn't stop me feeling a connection to what happens in the coming decades, centuries and beyond.
Each time we turn up for a protest, plant a tree, or volunteer to help our community, we're putting our energy toward making our world a better place. None of these actions has a certain outcome, but we do them anyway, because we know that collectively our efforts do amount to real change. One tree planted may not survive, but the forest we plant together will thrive for centuries to come. Planting that tree is a courageous symbol that votes for our future.
What involves courage in your life?

We believe that everyone has the the power to make a difference in our environment.

Do you agree we even make a difference?

We can as every effort counts and our choices could have a ripple effect to influence others to act.

Everyone has a responsibility to slow down climate change and there are choices you can make in your day-to-day life to lessen your personal impact on the environment. So if you think you're powerless against climate change and that one person can't make a difference, think again.
