What is Pulmonary Hypertension?
Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is not something you can easily see or detect, yet it is a life-threatening disease that silently affects the heart and lungs. Because its symptoms often resemble those of other, milder conditions, diagnosis can take months or even years. Every delay means a delay in access to treatment, and in PH, time is everything.
PH is a collective term for five distinct types of conditions that cause abnormally high blood pressure in the lungs. This increased pressure forces the right side of the heart to work harder, eventually leading to heart failure if left untreated.
While there is no cure (except for complex surgery for CTEPH), treatments do exist, often as a complex combination of targeted therapies, oxygen, and specialized care. These therapies can significantly improve both life expectancy and quality of life.
However, access to treatment, medicine, and proper care remains the difference between life and death for many patients. Costly drugs, limited coverage, and unequal availability continue to stand in the way of people who want to breathe, live, and hope.
Because for every person living with PH, access means life.
