Wednesday, Sept 17 – The Misdiagnosed Yeast Infection

Ngozi had been treated 3 times for “yeast infection” because of her constant itching and discharge. But no matter the cream or tablet, the symptoms kept coming back.

Finally, her doctor requested a High Vaginal Swab (HVS).

The test showed it wasn’t yeast at all—it was bacterial vaginosis (BV). The treatment was completely different.

👉🏾 Without the right test, she could have gone in circles for months.

Lesson :
Not all discharge is “infection.”

Yeast (Candida albicans) → a fungus, grows when the balance in the va**na is disrupted. It often shows up as “Candida species: high growth” on results.

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) → caused by an overgrowth of bacteria, especially Gardnerella va**nalis. You may see “Gardnerella spp: heavy growth” or “mixed flora suggestive of BV.”

STIs (like chlamydia, gonorrhea) → bacteria passed sexually, may show as “positive growth for…” with the specific organism named.

🧾 How to Understand Your Lab Results (Simplified):
* “Scanty growth” → very little detected, may not be significant.
* “Moderate growth” → worth noting, especially if symptoms match.
* “Heavy/High growth” → confirms this organism is driving your symptoms and needs treatment.
* If both Candida and BV bacteria are listed, it means you may have a mixed infection — treatment must cover both.

This is why self-medicating can fail. A cream for yeast won’t treat BV. And antibiotics for BV can worsen yeast!
