Update on Diptheria outbreak in Lagos@ Kings College VI Annexe.

12 year old Index case who presented on the 22nd Feb with typical symptoms of sore throat and fever, demised 2 days ago at LUTH paediatric unit despite full antibiotics and timely administration of full dose of anti toxoid at the hospital.

The index case developed progressive and irreversible myocarditis leading to his death.

34 close contact children where line listed and 18 are now apparently symptomatic.

Currently, the students have been transported to Children Emergency in LUTH, where they are currently being triaged.

40 doses of Diphtheria AntiToxin [DAT] is currently available in LUTH to reduce serious complications and fatality as required in the those triaged positively.

Erytromycin tabs prophylaxis for high-risk students is now available at the school.

Inspection of the school reveals unsatisfactory IPC measures and conditions.

The state is preparing for a vaccination campaign of high-risk students and healthcare providers.

Information leaflets are being disseminated to all health care facilities.

WHO, NCDC and NPHCDA are being informed.

We have close to 500,000 doses of vaccines in total.

Public announcement is being prepared as standby for deployment to educate public of
symptoms to look out for if cases escalate.

Emergency Operation Center activated today.

Will convene daily with updates for policy decision.

Subsequent meetings to include ministry of Basic and Tertiary Education, Tertiary and Quarternary institutions.
