A cryptic pregnancy happens when the usual pregnancy signs are very mild, confusing, or mistaken for something else. The woman may still see bleeding that looks like a period, may not gain much weight, and may not feel obvious baby movements early. Because of this, she might believe she is not pregnant.
Some reasons it happens include hormonal imbalance, irregular menstrual cycles, stress, or conditions like Polycystic O***y Syndrome. In some cases, pregnancy tests may come out negative early because the pregnancy hormone Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) is low or rises slowly.
Common clues later may include
• Feeling baby movement later in pregnancy
• Unusual stomach growth
• Nausea or fatigue that feels like normal illness
Example
For example, a woman may think she is just gaining weight or having stomach issues. Months later, she suddenly develops strong abdominal pain and goes to the hospital, only to find out she is in labor.
