In Applied Behavior Analysis, we differentiate between behavior suppression and behavior change.

Shouting often suppresses behavior temporarily because it introduces an aversive stimulus. Students may stop what they are doing because they are startled or because they want to avoid further escalation.

However, the underlying variables driving the behavior remain unchanged.

If the behavior was maintained by escape from difficult work, attention from adults, or access to preferred activities, those functions are still present.

The result is predictable: the behavior returns.

Sustainable classroom management relies on teaching replacement behaviors and reinforcing appropriate responses, not simply stopping behavior in the moment.

When educators shift from reaction to analysis, classrooms become more predictable, calmer, and more effective learning environments.

Parents raising autistic children often describe moments when their child suddenly becomes overwhelmed.
The child may cry, drop to the floor, scream, or withdraw completely.

These experiences can be confusing and sometimes frightening for caregivers.

In Applied Behavior Analysis, we refer to many of these situations as dysregulation.

Dysregulation occurs when a child’s nervous system becomes overloaded and the child struggles to process environmental demands.

Triggers may include loud environments, unfamiliar routines, communication difficulties, or sensory sensitivities.

Understanding dysregulation helps parents respond more effectively.

With consistent routines, structured teaching, and positive reinforcement, many children gradually develop stronger regulation skills over time.

When students know exactly what will happen next,
their brains spend less energy predicting the environment.

This reduces:

• anxiety
• confusion
• resistance to transitions

Strong classroom routines include:

• predictable arrival procedures
• structured transitions between subjects
• consistent expectations for group work
• clear end-of-day routines

Routines do not remove flexibility.

They create stability that supports learning.

These misunderstandings can sometimes lead to expectations that do not align with how ADHD actually affects learning and behavior.

ADHD primarily affects the brain systems responsible for attention regulation, impulse control, and executive functioning. Executive functioning includes skills such as organizing tasks, maintaining focus, planning activities, and regulating behavior in response to environmental demands.

Behavioral strategies rooted in Applied Behavior Analysis can be helpful in supporting students with ADHD. These strategies often include clear routines, task breakdowns, reinforcement systems, and structured learning environments that help students manage attention and task completion.

When ADHD is understood accurately, educators and families can focus on providing supports that promote learning, independence, and long-term success.

One behavior that is commonly associated with autism is stimming, a term used to describe self-stimulatory behaviors.

Stimming includes repetitive movements, sounds, or actions that help individuals regulate sensory experiences or emotional states.

For autistic individuals, environments can sometimes feel overwhelming due to differences in sensory processing. Sounds, lights, textures, and social demands may create levels of stimulation that require additional regulation.

Stimming can help them manage this sensory input.

It is important to recognize that not all stimming is problematic. Many forms of stimming serve an important self-regulatory function and may help individuals remain calm, focused, or emotionally balanced.

One of the most common misconceptions in education is the idea that kindness in the classroom leads to a lack of discipline.

Many educators have been taught that strictness alone produces respect and compliance.

However, decades of research in Applied Behavior Analysis and educational psychology tell a different story.

Kindness, when applied intentionally, is not permissive teaching. It is a powerful behavioral strategy.

In ABA, behavior is shaped through consequences. When students receive consistent reinforcement for appropriate behavior, that behavior becomes more likely to occur again.

Many behaviors teachers see in classrooms are often labeled quickly as disrespect, defiance, or laziness.

But when we look through the lens of Applied Behavior Analysis, we see something very different.

We see dysregulation.

A dysregulated child is not choosing chaos. Their nervous system is overwhelmed. In many classrooms, students face constant sensory, social, and academic demands:

• bright lights
• noise levels
• rapid transitions
• group instructions
• time-limited tasks
• social expectations

For some learners, especially autistic students or students with ADHD these demands can exceed their current coping capacity.

When this happens, behavior escalates.

Not because the child wants attention or wants to disrupt learning, but because the brain shifts from learning mode to survival mode.

In ABA, our job is not to punish dysregulation.

Our job is to analyze the environment, identify triggers, and teach skills that help the learner succeed.

When educators understand the function behind behavior, classrooms become more supportive and far more effective for learning.

And often, small adjustments make the biggest difference.

Autism presents differently in every learner, but ABA provides a consistent framework for understanding and support.

By focusing on observable behavior, structured teaching, and data-driven decisions, educators can support autistic students without relying on assumptions or punishment.

Understanding leads to better outcomes, for students and educators alike.

In applied behavior analysis, behavior is never addressed based on diagnosis alone.
Although ADHD and Autism may present with overlapping classroom behaviors, the underlying mechanisms differ.

ABA interventions must be individualized based on function, skill level, and environmental variables.

When educators understand this distinction, behavior plans become more effective, and learners receive support that actually works.

Last month, our Founder, Dr. John Udaze , had the privilege of speaking at the Blaze Health Foundation (BHF) 2026 Capacity Building Workshop for Counsellors, held at Ikeja Senior Grammar School Lagos Nigeria.

The workshop, which brought together school counsellors and mental health advocates, focused on strengthening professional capacity to better support children and adolescents in our schools.

Dr. John joined other respected professionals, to share practical insights on understanding behavior, structured intervention strategies, and the importance of early, evidence-based support systems within educational settings.

What stood out most was the level of engagement from counsellors who are deeply committed to improving outcomes for the students they serve.

Conversations around behavior support in Nigerian schools are growing, and we are proud to be part of that shift.

At Behavior Solutions Inc, collaboration remains at the heart of what we do. When professionals are equipped with the right tools and understanding, children benefit.

We are grateful to Blaze Health Foundation for the opportunity and look forward to continued partnerships that strengthen mental health and behavior support systems across Nigeria.
