*Digital Screens And Eye Strain*
Starring at the screen reduces the number of times you blink per minute. This causes eyestrain and makes tears to evaporate faster, leading to dryness.
Although reading printed materials for a prolonged period of time can cause eye fatigue, the letters on digital screens are not often as precise or sharply defined. Also reduced contrast in addition to presence of glare and reflection makes viewing on digital screens difficult.
The following guide lines can help you to prevent eyestrain.
*Give your eyes a break*
Taking your eyes off the screen is the best thing you can do. Look at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds, every 20 minutes. This is called the '20-20-20' rule.
*Illumination Control*
Adjust the brightness on the screen to the room illumination. Also turn your screen away from facing the window/direct source of light to avoid reflection/glare.
*Your sitting position*
Take care of your sitting position by setting your computer at an arm's length while the top of the screen aligns below your eye level.
*Background*
The color of the screen background should be quite distinct from that of the print. Black on white is preferred
*Have an eye examination*
Uncorrected/undercorrected refractive error can cause you great discomfort. It is important that you have an eye test even if you think your vision is good.
Your eye care practitioner may consider prescribing lenses that are coated to prevent infiltration of blue ultraviolet to your eyes.
