🦠 Did you know there's a tapeworm called Taenia solium that can cause serious health problems?

🚨 While the worm itself lives harmlessly in your gut, if eggs from contaminated food or poor hygiene enter your body, they can travel to your brain and cause seizures or epilepsy — a condition called neurocysticercosis.

🌍 This disease affects millions worldwide—estimates suggest 2.5 to 8 million people suffer from it, and it’s preventable!

*The main ways to stay safe?*

✅ Wash your hands thoroughly, especially after using the bathroom.

✅ Wash vegetables and cook pork thoroughly.

✅ Avoid using untreated human manure in farming.

✅ Educate yourself and others about transmission.

🐷 Breaking the cycle also involves vaccinating pigs and improving farming practices—part of a “One Health” approach that protects humans, animals, and the environment.

💪 Stay safe, practice good hygiene, and always follow the science.

🌴🩺 The climate crisis is a health crisis.

🚨 The 2025 Lancet Countdown report, in collaboration with WHO, shows that climate change is already costing millions of lives and straining health systems worldwide.

🌡️ Heat-related deaths increased 23% since the 1990s, with over 546,000 lives lost annually.

🔥 Droughts and wildfires are pushing millions into food insecurity, while economic losses from heat and disasters run into trillions of dollars.

But there’s hope!

Many communities and cities are leading the way with:

🔹 Cleaner energy
🔹 Sustainable diets
🔹 Climate-resilient health systems

🌱💚 Switching to renewable energy could save over 10 million lives each year.

📈 As COP30 approaches, we must accelerate climate action that centers on protecting health, reducing inequalities, and creating a sustainable future for all.

Every action counts—health and climate are deeply connected.

World Mental Health Day 2025 | 10 October

In times of crisis, protecting mental health is vital. This year’s theme,

“Mental health in humanitarian emergencies”, calls for stronger support for those enduring conflict and displacement.

Key facts:
💔 Natural disasters, conflicts, and emergencies take a heavy toll on emotional well-being.
🌍 1 in 5 people in conflict-affected areas experiences a mental health condition.
🏚️ In 2024, 123 million people were forcibly displaced worldwide.
💡 71% of the world’s refugees live in low- and middle-income countries, where mental health services are often limited.

If you are affected by crisis:
🔷 You are not alone, reaching out for support is a sign of strength.
🔷 Seek help from local health or humanitarian services.
🔷 Stay connected with others; community and support can help you cope and heal.

Taking care of your mental health helps you rebuild your life, step by step. 💙

🧠 What if the air your child breathes harms their brain?

Air pollution is an urgent, invisible threat – linked not just to lung disease but also stroke, heart disease, dementia, anxiety and depression.

🧒🏽 Children are most at risk: their lungs are still growing, they breathe faster, and they spend more time outdoors.

🌍 9 in 10 people breathe air that fails WHO standards.

🫁 Tiny particles can reach deep into lungs – and the brain.

*What helps?*

🚶 Avoid busy roads when possible.

🏠 Instead of using wood, coal or kerosene at home, try to use cleaner fuels like electricity or LPG (liquefied petroleum gas).

🤸🏽‍♀️ Regular physical activity provides significant physical and mental health benefits.

In adults, physical activity helps:

🔹 Prevent chronic health conditions
🔹 Manage chronic health conditions
🔹 Reduce depression and anxiety
🔹 Enhance brain health
🔹 Improve overall wellbeing

In children and adolescents, physical activity helps:

🔸 Promote bone health
🔸 Encourage healthy growth
🔸 Encourage development of muscle
🔸 Improve motor and cognitive development

However, data shows that 31% of adults and 80% of adolescents don’t meet the recommended levels of physical activity.

💪🏽 Any physical activity is better than none. Here’s how to get your physical activity levels up:

🤰🏽 Pregnant and postpartum women should get 150 minutes of physical activity per week.

🧔🏽‍♂️ Adults and older adults should get 150-300 minutes of physical activity per week.

🧒🏼 Children and adolescents should get 60 minutes of physical activity per day.

Now, get moving!

💪🏿 Today is World Malaria Day, and it’s time to recommit to ending malaria.

🦟 Malaria is a life-threatening disease spread to humans by some types of mosquitoes. It is mostly found in tropical countries. It is preventable and curable.

In 2023, there were 263 million malaria cases and 597 000 deaths in 83 countries.

💡 We know how to end malaria. The choice is ours: act now or risk losing ground. Ending malaria is not just a health imperative; it is an investment in a more equitable, safer and prosperous future for every nation.

*Here are some key facts to know:*

🔹 Malaria claims an estimated 1 life every minute.

🔹 95% of deaths from malaria occur in in the African Region.

🔹 11 countries in Africa bear two thirds of the world’s malaria burden.

🔹 Since 2000, 2.2 billion malaria cases and 12.7 million deaths have been averted.

🔹 After years of steady decline in malaria cases and deaths, progress has stalled.

Malaria can be prevented by avoiding mosquito bites and by taking medicines. Talk to a doctor about taking medicines such as chemoprophylaxis before travelling to areas where malaria is common.

*Lower the risk of getting malaria by avoiding mosquito bites:*

1️⃣ Use mosquito nets when sleeping in places where malaria is present.
2️⃣ Use mosquito repellents (containing DEET, IR3535 or Icaridin) after dusk.
3️⃣ Use coils and vaporizers.
4️⃣ Wear protective clothing.
5️⃣ Use window screens.

🌏 24-30 April 2025 is *World Immunization Week*.

💉Over the last 50 years, vaccines have saved at least 154 million lives. That’s 6 lives a minute, every day, for five decades.

During this period, there has been a 40% improvement in infant survival. However, we still need to reach millions of children who’ve never had a single vaccine.

*We also need to protect:*

👵🏽 older people from flu
👧🏾 young girls from HPV
🍼 babies from malaria & RSV
🤰🏼 pregnant women from tetanus

⚠️ We are at a watershed moment in the history of global health. Hard-won gains in stamping out diseases that are preventable through vaccination are in jeopardy. Decades of collaborative efforts between governments, aid agencies, scientists, healthcare workers, and parents got us to where we are today –– a world where we’ve eradicated smallpox and almost eradicated polio.

World Immunization Week 2025 aims to ensure even more children, adolescents, adults – and their communities – are protected against vaccine-preventable diseases.

☂️ Protect yourself and your family with immunization.

⁉️ Did you know that tuberculosis (TB) is the world’s deadliest infectious disease?

⚠️ About a quarter of the global population is estimated to have been infected with TB bacteria, but most people will not develop the disease. In 2023, TB was responsible for 1.25 million deaths worldwide.

Key facts about TB:

🦠 Caused by bacteria that mainly affects the lungs
🗣 Spreads through the air when infected people cough, sneeze or spit

💉 It is preventable and curable
💊 It is treated with antibiotics

TB exists in all countries and age groups, but low- and middle-income regions are most affected.

Global efforts have saved 79 million lives since 2000! But we must do more to end TB by 2030.

Protect yourself from TB starts with:

✅ Awareness
🔬 Early detection
💊 Treatment

Consult your physician if you see symptoms like prolonged coughing, fever, or weight loss, especially if you've been in contact with someone diagnosed with tuberculosis recently.

Did you know that…

⚠️ Over 200 diseases are caused by eating contaminated food.

🥘 1 in 10 people worldwide fall ill from contaminated food each year.

👶🏽 40% of the foodborne disease burden is carried by children under 5.

💵 US$ 110 billion is lost each year in productivity and medical expenses resulting from unsafe food in low- and middle-income countries.

Foodborne illnesses are usually infectious or toxic in nature and caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites, or chemical substances entering the body through contaminated food.

💡 Access to sufficient amounts of safe and nutritious food is key to sustaining life and good health.

🍎 Safe food supplies also contribute to food and nutrition security, support national economies, trade and tourism, and underpin sustainable development.

Food safety is everyone’s business, here’s what you can do:

*Practice* safe food handling at home: keep it clean, separate raw and cooked food, cook food thoroughly, keep food at safe temperatures and use safe water and raw materials.

*Learn* how to keep food safe before, during, and after emergencies, such as floods, fires, natural disasters or the loss of power.

*Know* how to report poor hygiene standards and misleading food labelling.

Food safety fact sheet provides key facts and information on major foodborne illnesses, causes, evolving world and food safety and WHO response.
