Let's talk about the dangers of taking different medicines at the same time (polypharmacy) without seeking the advice of a health professional
We all know that concomitant use of medicines can be used to manage different health problems all at once. However they must be taken properly to ensure that they are safe, effective and should not negatively interact with the other medicines to alter any body function.
A drug interaction is a situation in which a substance affects the activity of a drug ie the effects are increased or decreased or they produce a new effect that the drug neither produces on its own. This effects may include the adverse effects of the drug.
Yes, concomitant administration of some drugs may increase the undesirable effects of the other drug to the patient. Below are some examples of undesirable effects caused by some commonly prescribed drugs when taken together.
* Metronidazole taken with Warfarin (Antiplatelet) may lead to a fatal bleeding
* Taking sildenafil with nitroglycerin leads to severe hypotension and may lead to death
* Ciprofloxacin, Clarithromycin, Cimetidine and Erythromycin taken with theophylline leads to increase in the level of theophylline in the blood which may lead to death.
Don't assume it's a common drug or supplement, ask your pharmacist before you take it together .
