Bursary: Kogi Medical Students Appeals To Ododo For Inclusion

The Kogi State Medical Student Association (KOMSA) has appealed to the governor of Kogi State, His excellency, Alhaji Usman Ododo to prioritize the welfare of medical students in the state.

The National President of the association, Comrade Omeiza Adeku Samuel who spoke with the newsmen on Monday decry the little recognition given to the medical students in terms of bursary payment. Adeku said 'less than 30% of medical students nationwide benefited from the state bursary'. He stated that despite paying the highest tuition in every Nigerian institutions across the country, it's unfortunate that only the law students received a special package when it comes to bursary payment.

The President further stated that the 30,000 naira bursary payment promised by the state government is yet to be received by majority of the medical students who applied. This is in 'contrast to law students who got 300,000 naira for their law school program'- He said in part.

In his words "Your Excellency we want to appreciate the good works that you have been doing in Kogi state, Kogi today is always on the news positively. We were happy to hear about the bursary which you promised students of Kogi origin but to our shock most medical students did not receive the 30,000 naira even when our colleague from the law schools were paid 300,000 naira. We are appealing that you consider us in your plans as the cost of medical education is the highest in any university in Nigeria. Last year we had to contribute to cater for the tuition fee of our students in the university of Jos. As the National President, my school fees currently stands at 570,000 naira. Since my 400 level class I have not been able to buy a single medical textbook. This is the reality of most of us in medical school."

This appeal came barely a week after the Kogi State Scholarship Board credited some students account for the 2025 Kogi State students' bursary.

Subject: Summary of the Visit with the Honorable Commissioner of Health

Dear KOMSA Members,

I am writing to provide you with a summary of our recent visit to the Honorable Commissioner of Health, Dr. Abdulazeez Adams Adeiza.

During our courtesy visit on Monday, May 13th, 2024, we had the opportunity to present our 4-point agenda, which outlined key initiatives aimed at advancing healthcare and medical education within Kogi State. These points included:

1. Establishing a bond agreement between the government and medical students to ensure a consistent flow of doctors within the state.
2. Organizing a national quiz competition to promote academic excellence among medical students.
3. Conducting research on the impact of cultural practices on the health of Kogi indigenes.
4. Hosting a national health week to raise awareness and promote healthy living.

The Commissioner responded positively to our agenda, expressing his deep commitment to supporting medical students and improving healthcare in the state. Drawing from his own experience as a former representative of KOMSA, he understood the challenges we face and pledged his full support.

In particular, the Commissioner assured us that he would explore avenues to increase the number of doctors within Kogi State. He proposed initiating house job opportunities at the Kogi State Specialist Hospital and drafting a bond agreement proposal to formalize our partnership with the government. Additionally, he suggested sponsoring a bill in the state house of assembly to institutionalize these efforts.

Overall, the meeting was productive and encouraging. The Commissioner's support gives us confidence that our goals are achievable, and we look forward to working closely with him and the relevant authorities to bring about positive change in the healthcare sector.

Thank you for your continued dedication and commitment to the mission of KOMSA.

SAMUEL ADEKU
KOMSA NATIONAL PRESIDENT.

May 28th

A Woman's Flow

Like rivers flowing, red and true
A woman's body, a story anew
A natural cycle, a monthly grace
A sign of life, a sacred space

But for many, it's a burden borne
A secret kept, a shame that's sworn
The stigma surrounds, a heavy weight
A silence kept, a story untold, a fate

Let's break the chains, let's speak the truth
A woman's flow, a natural youth
Let's educate, let's normalize the sight
A menstruator's pride, a beacon of light

Let's support each other, hand in hand
A sisterhood, a bond that stands
Together we rise, together we fall
A woman's flow, a story for all
