*Psalm 40: Don't Lose Your Courage*

Psalm 40:11-12 Lord, don’t hold back your tender mercies from me. Let your unfailing love and faithfulness always protect me. For troubles surround me— too many to count! My sins pile up so high I can’t see my way out. They outnumber the hairs on my head. I have lost all courage.

The enemies rejoice whenever we proclaim our breaking point. It is like, we have reached a point of no return. It excites them because at such moments, the believer has given up all her strength and rescind his faith into the hands of fate. Whenever we are overwhelmed with situations of life, the very first attempt is to try everything within our ability to tackle the problem. When the problem persists and saps off our strength and resources, we begin to lose our courage in confronting it. Many people will give up when they discover that their capacity cannot guarantee the solution to their problems.

Courage is a vital ingredient for a successful living. After the exploits done by Moses in leading the Israelites out of Egypt into the wilderness, another leader was needed to replace him after his death. Due to the exploits of Moses, getting someone to fill into that capacity was a Herculean task. When the Lord found Joshua, and choose him in the place of Moses, he saw the fear in the heart and eyes of Joshua. The Lord persistently reminded him to be strong and courageous, and never to give room to fears and doubts in the face of troubles.

This word of commission is also vital for everyone of us today. When we are overwhelmed by the challenges of life, we can tilt to becoming like the Psalmist today, who said: I have lost all courage. When you decided to give up your courage, you have successfully lost your confidence in God and self. You have also lost your strength and energy for living. You have surrendered your will power and freedom to the hands of the enemy. You have subscribed into a future that will never reflect your dream and vision. The enemies gets complete empowerment over you when you lose your courage.

Today, let me close with the declaration from the writer of Hebrews. It says: "So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. For, “In just a little while, he who is coming will come and will not delay. But my righteous one will live by faith. And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back. But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved (Hebrews 10:34-39).

*Prayer:* Precious Father, the source of my confidence. Help me not to lose my confidence in you. In the face of life situations and challenges, help me to remain courageous. Don't let me rescind to fate but keep my faith strong and active. Thank You Father, Amen.

*Psalm 40: Sound His Testimony*

Psalm 40:10 I have not kept the good news of your justice hidden in my heart; I have talked about your faithfulness and saving power. I have told everyone in the great assembly of
your unfailing love and faithfulness.

When last did you sound God's testimonies in your life before the gathering of the saints? I always think that Orthodox and Evangelical churches need to step up when it comes to sharing testimonies. Many believers sit on their testimonies and keep it silent in their hearts. It is not humility, neither is it spirituality to keep mute in the face of God's glorious acts of interventions in your life. Testimonies serves the dual purposes of glorifying God and edifying his Church. Many people have their faith strengthened when they hear the testimonies of the righteous. In today's Psalm, the Psalmist talked about three fold testimonies.

First, he declared the justice of God. You will always underestimate justice until you have been denied or accused falsely. The world we live in today is grossly influenced by injustices. Haven't you discovered that it is now the ungodly and wicked ones that are now boasting, "let us go to court?" This is because they have discovered that the world's justice system is like a market place where the highest bidder wins. When the Lord turns the craftiness of your accusers in the seat of justice, you should never keep mute in declaring his justice in your life.

Secondly, the Psalmist also declared God's faithfulness in His saving power. God is too faithful to fail His children. Whenever we are faced with dangers that can swallow us up, the Lord in His faithfulness to His word and promise will always guarantee our deliverances. This did not begin with us. Right from the time of our Patriarchs, to their descendants, to the prophets and kings, to the disciples and Apostles and to us today, God has been and He is still faithful in saving His children. His word has declared, call upon me in the day of trouble and I will deliver you. This promise still stands till date.

Thirdly, the Psalmist declared God's unfailing love. A parents might get tired of loving his children when the odds of life happens. When the child decides to live a recalcitrant life, the parent might give up on the child. God will never leave His own nor forsake them. He has a commitment to His children which no earthly parents can do. The unfailing love of God is God's act of tender mercies. When you think of how underserving you are and yet God keeps coming through for you, it's a call to sound His testimonies. Don't allow your mouths to be sealed when it comes to testimony. Share the good news of the Lord. Let the Nations know how good our God is. May the testimonies of God never cease on our lips in Jesus' name, Amen.

*Prayer:* Precious Father, I am grateful for your mighty acts of interventions in my life and family. I can see what you are doing in my life. My mouth will not be closed when it gets to testimony. I will declare how you responded with your justice in my life. I will declare your faithfulness in saving the elect. I will declare your loving kindness. Thank You Father, Amen.

*Psalm 40: Not Afraid To Speak*

Psalm 40:9 I have told all your people about your justice. I have not been afraid to speak out, as you, O Lord, well know.

The greatest task of a disciple is the ability to be bold and unapologetic in the proclamation of God's word. In a world of injustice, social vices and dynamic evils, the believer must be bold in declaring God's truth and nothing but the truth. When I listen to any preacher who sounds afraid and economical with the gospel truth, it becomes a complete turn off for me. The gospel must be proclaimed without any iota of fear or fervour. Though the people must be offended at the sound of truth, the gospeller must remain focused in proclaiming God's justice and truth.

Peter the Apostle was timid and afraid even as a disciple of Jesus. We saw his display of fear when Jesus asked him to walk on water. Because of fear that conquered his faith, he started drowning. When Jesus was arrested and tried, Peter displayed another dimension of cowardice towards the slave girl at the council. He denied knowing Jesus and went as far as swearing to his denial. But at Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came and poured out the baptism of fire upon the disciples, Peter became so bold and challenged the Jews to their faces. He preached a sermon that brought in a large harvest of souls into God's kingdom.

In a time like this where injustice is trending, justice is becoming a scarce commodity. There are many lawyers, magistrates and judges who have sworn the oath of justice but are afraid in promoting justice. There are many justices today that will support injustice just because of fear factor. Apart from Justices, there are also many pastors who are afraid of preaching the truth just because they don't want the church to be empty by offending the sinners. When you are economize the gospel truth, you will be preaching another gospel entirely.

Just like the Psalmist, the people must know us as preachers and speakers of the truth and justice as well. You must be aware, speakers of truth and justice are not loved by many but they are known as the ambassadors of Jesus. One of the reasons why Jesus was hated by many was because of his stern proclamation of the truth. And Jesus said, if the world hated him, they will hate us too as his disciples. We must steer clear from injustice and promote justice and truth. An injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Injustice will reign when men of justice and truth refuse to speak. Be bold. Speak truth and justice into your world. Shalom.

*Prayer:* Precious Father, fill my heart with boldness and make me unashamed in the proclamation of your truth and justice. Let me be known as a lover and defender of truth and justice. May injustice and lies be silenced in my time. Let truth and justice reign continually. Thank You Father, Amen.

*Psalm 40: I Take Joy In Service (2)*

Psalm 40:7-8 Then I said, “Look, I have come. As is written about me in the Scriptures: I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart.”

This is one of the messianic Psalms that revealed the personality of Jesus. This Psalm is very similar to Luke 4:16-21 that says: When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures. The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.” He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently. Then he began to speak to them. “The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!”

Haven't you observed that in the ministry of Jesus, everything he did was done with passion and enthusiasm. This is because he has been able to establish the reason why he came. He has not to come to entertain the world or seek his own praise. He came strictly for God's service. The template for his service was not based on sentiments or emotions. The instructions that will govern his acts has been planted in his heart. This is the reason why he never struggled to do God's will. He came with the will of God that has been inscribed in his heart. He ran with it purposely and the Father was glorified in him.

As believers today, how many of us can say boldly that: look, I have come to do his service just as it has been written concerning me? There is a big shift in coming to do his will these days. Everyone come in his name and under his commission. But when you take time to reflect deeply about their works, you will discover that many have left his will and service and are busy chasing their own glories. The only guarantee that can keep you in his service is by receiving his instructions planted in your heart and not on your lips.

There must be translational experience of God writing his instructions in your heart and no longer on a tablet of stones. When we claim to come in the name of the Lord, we must seek to do his will alone. We must take joy in his service. Today, examine yourself in the place of God's service. Are you serving him with joy or sorrow? Are you serving him as a duty or you are just doing him a favour? The Psalmist says, I was glad when they say to me, let us go into the house of the Lord. Do you feel the gladness of his service? Check your purpose and live wisely. Shalom.

*Prayer:* Precious Father, thank You for your calling and election over my life. Help me to realize my essence and purpose in following you. Let your word and instructions be inscribed in my heart. May I not struggle in serving you. Let the joy of your service gladen my heart always. Thank You Father, Amen.

*Psalm 40: I Take Joy In Service*

Psalm 40:7-8 Then I said, “Look, I have come. As is written about me in the Scriptures: I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart.”

Doing God's will to some is like working under a slave master. This is why you see some persons give up in serving or their services to God just because they couldn't find joy in doing so. Whenever I read about the attacks on tithing and Christian giving, I only conclude that these people lost their joy in selfless giving. So whenever they give, they feel like they have been imprisoned to doing it. This is also the attitude of some persons when they come into the house of God on Sundays. They feel like they have been conditioned into worship and they do it like a coercion instead of liberty.

When you discover your purpose in life and existence, you will run with it joyfully because you have received an understanding that whatever you do, is a reflection of what you have been made to do. This is why the Psalmist said: Look, I have come to do what is written about me. What is written is written. There are no doubts or maybes about it. You must familiarize yourself with what has been written about you. You must have a clean cut understanding about what has been written about you. Most importantly, you must run and work in line with what has been written about you.

When you understand your purpose, you will run with joy. The Psalmist says: I take joy in doing your will, my God, for your instructions are written on my heart. This is the Christian's joy that the world will never understand. When we give sacrificially to engage in outreaches and missions, it gives us joy in seeing the Nations coming to Jesus, but the heathen cannot understand such joy. When we pay our tithes and give our offerings, we have joy in our hearts because we know that there will be meat in our Father's house, but the heathen cannot understand such joy.

When we come together in fellowship, worship and service, it gives us joy to be in communion with our Father in heaven, but the unbelievers cannot understand such joy. Friends, taking joy in serving God will only be appreciated by discovering what has been written about you. Whenever you see a soldier who has discovered the essence of his service, such person already knows that the greatest joy and honour that will be attributed to his service can cost him his own life. And in the face of such events, he is willing to joyfully engage in death. Serving God purposefully brings joy. Even in the face of the worst, joy is activated. Shalom.

*Prayer:* Precious Father, help me discover what has been written about me. Help me to look intently into my life and discover what is the true essence and purpose of my being. Help me to serve you faithfully, cheerfully and joyfully. In a world where many are growing cold, let my love and zeal for your work be full of passion. Thank You Father, Amen.

*Psalm 40: God Cannot Be Bribed*

Psalm 40:6 You take no delight in sacrifices or offerings. Now that you have made me listen, I finally understand- you don’t require burnt offerings or sin offerings.

In most traditional rites and practices, when the gods are offended, a sacrifice is needed to appease the gods. When the practitioners of such religion needs a special favour, a sacrifice is needed to appease the gods for such special favours to be granted. Anything that is connected with the gods, must require some sacrificial elements. These elements varies from material things to living animals. The interesting thing about these elements for sacrificial appeal is the fact they are uncommon and always difficult to get. This creates an impression that what you need to appease the gods is very essential and peculiar to the gods alone.

The saddest reality about such practices is that it has crept subtly into the church. If the Lord should open your eyes to see the reason why some persons will bring some items and animals into His Church, you will marvel at such revelation. There are young lads who have engaged in so many rituals and occultic way of life. All of a sudden, you will get notified that such young people or their parents want to come for Thanksgiving to God. They will come to the house of God with sometimes a white ram or white fowl. Many do that because they think by offering such sacrifices, God will show them mercy.

We must evolve from our Old Testament knowledge about God to the revelation of God to us in the New Testament. Yes, in the Old Testament, God gave Moses a set of instructions regarding the various sacrifices. Each sacrifice is designated for a particular cleansing
or appease. In the New Testament, Christ Jesus has been offered as the only sacrifice for all time. So, God is no longer looking for turtle doves, or a white ram or scape goat before cleansing His children or granting their heart desires.

Today, let no man sway you into wrong doctrine. God cannot be bribed by human sacrifices. God will not forgive you and cleanse you from your sins because you offered a sacrifice to Him. The Psalmist has already declared that the sacrifices of the Lord are broken spirit and a pure and contrite heart. Such sacrifices, the Lord will never despise. Let this understanding dwell richly in you and cause you to walk in wisdom. Repeating the sacrifices of Moses will weaken your understanding and appreciation of the sacrifice of Jesus. Don't be deceived, no sacrifice can bribe God. Shalom.

*Prayer:* Precious Father, grant me the understanding to walk with you in the uprightness of heart. May I not fall into the error of offering sacrifices for the atonement of sins and seeking special favours. Cause me to know that a broken spirit and a pure and contrite heart is all your need from me. Thank You Father, Amen.

*Psalm 40: Wonders Without Numbers (2)*

Psalm 40:5 O Lord my God, you have performed many wonders for us. Your plans for us are too numerous to list. You have no equal. If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds, I would never come to the end of them.

The Psalmist says: even when I try to recite the wonders of God in my life, I wouldn't be able. Let me create a chart to guide your heart in focusing on the wonders of God in your life. First, focus on the wonderful deeds of God from your conception, to birth and infanthood. Your conception is an act that was predetermined by God. He made you the gender that you are today. He kept you safe in the waters of your mother's womb. Your delivery was an act of his wonder. Surviving through the early years of ignorance and childhood can only be an act of God.

God in his wonderful deeds causes us to grow from our infanthood into adolescence and teenagehood. This is stage where God intervene in our formation through the rigors of our active disobedience. Whenever I think about my teenage life and the foolish things that I admired and did, I realized that it is the wonders of God that reordered my life. God preserved His own through the risks and ignorant audacious acts of teenagehood, hence they were not consumed by the strange flames of their passions, neither were their destinies aborted or truncated.

It is the wonderful acts of God that transform the teenager into young adults and adulthood. It is the wonderful act of God that will see you through school or trainings. It is the wonderful acts of God that will settle you in marital relationship. It is the wonderful act of God that will give you a meaningful job or business to manage. It is the wonderful act of God that will cause you to grow and prosper in the works of your hands. It is the wonderful acts of God that will cause another family to grow out of you. In your old age, it is the wonderful acts of God that will cause you to see your children's children.

The wonderful acts of God cannot be exhausted. We can count all day and not even get to the half of it. We can never count the number of healings we enjoyed from God in our life time. We can never count the number of protection from death and satanic attacks that we received from God in our life's time. We can never exhaust the number of provisions and supplies that God made available for us in our life time. Neither can we count the miracle of seeing a new day. Today, I join the Psalmist to declare: O Lord my God, you have performed many wonders for us. Your plans for us are too numerous to list. You have no equal. If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds, I would never come to the end of them.

*Prayer:* Precious Father, wonderful God, the God who does wonders for His children, thank you for your wonderful acts of intervention in my life. If the whole of my body was mouth, it will not be enough to recount your wonderful acts in my life. Thank you for seeing me through from my conception to adulthood. Thank You Father, Amen.

*Psalm 40: Wonders Without Numbers.*

Psalm 40:5 O Lord my God, you have performed many wonders for us. Your plans for us are too numerous to list. You have no equal. If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds, I would never come to the end of them.

Can you number the wonderful acts of God in your life? Have you ever made an attempt to count the wonderful acts of God in your life? A realistic attempt to count would make one to agree with the Psalmist that God has done wonders that can never be numbered in one's life. For someone like Moses, if he decides to count the wonders of God in his life time, we would probably have the following experiences:
His birth and miraculous survival (drawn out of water);
The burning bush and encounter with God;
The staff that turned into a serpent and swallowed up the magicians serpents;
The plague that turned the Nile river into blood;
The plague that caused frogs to invade the land;
The plague that turned the dusts into gnats;
The plague that unleashed flies on the land;
The plague that devoured and destroyed the livestock;
The plague that brought the boils on the skin of the Egyptians;
The plague that brought hail;
The plaque that brought the invasion of locusts;
The plague that turned day into gross darkness;
The destruction and death of the firstborn...

Before the killing of the firstborn of the Egyptian, God gave Moses a wonderful instruction to pass to the Israelites. They were instructed on how to observe the passover and use the blood of the passover lamb to mark the lintels of their doors. The Angel of death passed through the entire land of Egypt. All those whose doors were marked with the blood, their household were spared. But the firstborn of those who did not receive the instruction were destroyed. In the middle of the night the wailings of the Egyptians littered the air. But the Israelites were saved.

The epic wonder of splitting the Red Sea and making the ground dried for the Israelites to pass through is a wonder that can never be wholistically described. The 40 years sojourn in various camps in the wilderness are marked with wonders that cannot be numbered. This is just the encounter of Moses alone that were canonized in the scriptures for us to read. The wonders that Moses saw from the hand of the Lord that were not written are still far more than this. This day, I join the Psalmist to reaffirm this statement: "O Lord my God, you have performed many wonders for us. Your plans for us are too numerous to list. You have no equal. If I tried to recite all your wonderful deeds, I would never come to the end of them."

*Prayer:* O God of wonders, how great are your wonders in my life. You have done great and wonderful deeds for me and my family. When I see the breaking of a new day, I proclaim your wonders. When I think about your provision and protection, I am amazed at your wonders. Thank You for being so wonderful to me. Amen.

*Psalm 40: It's Sweet To Trust Jesus*.

Psalm 40:4 Oh, the joys of those who trust the Lord, who have no confidence in the proud or in those who worship idols.

Have you ever gone through a season in your life where your trust in the Lord was tested? The period of trust is never an easy one. It is filled with so many trials and temptations. When Abram and Sarai were trusting God for the fulfillment of God's promise in the provision of a heir, it was a very long process. In the course of the wait, Abram and Sarai had to compromise by bringing in Hagar. Although Hagar gave birth to a son for Abraham, the Lord had to teach Abraham on how to trust him till the end by not affirming Ishmael as the heir and giving him a son named Isaac in his old age.

Trusting God is not as easy as it sounds. Especially in this age and time. People will mock you as if you don't know what you are doing. Whenever you reject their worldly alternatives, they will practically cuss you out. Just like the case of Job. When the wife saw the displeasing situation in his life and the practical impossibility for a recovery, she mocked Job in the face of his trust in God. This is also how the worldly people mock believers who choose to trust God in the face of their realities.

I recalled the story of a young man who was struggling financially. He was into meniac and odd jobs to meet his daily needs. He was a firm example of those who trust God. One day, himself and his friends went on a job far away from his hometown. While they were working, they stumbled into a valuable treasure that can change their fortunes forever. He refused to agree with his friends to make away with it. Due to his disagreement, they have to return the fortune back to the owner. His friends cursed him with the most horrible words. Infact, one of them told him that he was going to die in suffering and poverty.

After some years of trusting God, a supernatural turnaround happened in his life and his fortunes changed for a greater life. This is why the Psalmist exclaimed: Oh, the joys of those who trust the Lord, who have no confidence in the proud or in those who worship idols. It is at the end of your trusting Jesus that you will feel the joys and the sweetness. The hymn writer says: Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus; just to take Him at His words; just to wait upon His Promise and to know This saith the Lord.

*Prayer:* Precious Jesus, I trust you with the whole of my heart. When others trust in horses and systems, I choose to trust you alone. May I feel the joys of those who trust you. May I feel the sweetness of trusting Jesus. Don't let my trust in you be in vain. Thank You Jesus, Amen.

*Psalm 40: God Has Given Me A Song*.

Psalm 40:3 He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the Lord.

There is a song for every miracle and breakthrough. There is an unheard sound and melody that only the recipient of God's manifold blessings can produce that no other person can. In Revelation 7:12, the saints that made it out of the great tribulation, together with the 24 elders and host of Angels, were singing a new song to the Lord. In Exodus chapter 15, after the Israelites were delivered from Egypt, Moses sang to the Lord. Miriam with the women produced melodies from tambourines as they sang to the Glory of God for His deliverance upon the Israelites.

The book of Psalm is a collection of poems and songs which focuses on God's praise because of His deliverances for king David and the Israelites. Infact, David had a chief musician known as Asaph who was in charge of most of his psalms of praise. In the New Testament, after the Angelic visitation to Mary, she also entered into singing songs of praise in anticipation of the fulfillment of the promise from the Lord.

Anybody can sing a song of praise. It is a different experience when the song is birthed out of your encounter with the Lord. The Psalmist says: "He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God." Whenever you have a difficulty in singing praise songs, just pray and ask for a miracle from the Lord. Whenever your miracle comes, it comes with your song of praise. This season, God will give you a new song of praise. O barren women, at the fulfillment of your promise of Fruitfulness, you will return like Hannah with a song of praise. O young lady that has been delayed in marital settlement, the day of your wedding, a new song of praise will come out of your lips. O you frustrated young man who is struggling to get a foothold in life, the day of your divine visitation, God will put a new song in your mouth. There is a new song that is ringing in your heart. I declare this day, that your song will be heard and many who know your story will rejoice with you. Shalom.

*Confession:* This day, we join the angels and elders to sing: Amen, blessings and glory, wisdom and Thanksgiving and honour and power and might, belong to our God forever and ever. Amen. May our songs exalt the name of Jesus. May our singing preach a message of our testimony to others. May others be drawn to God because of the songs that He has inspired in us. Hallelujah.
