In an emotional moment that unfolded just now in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the Swaggart family has been left stunned following a shocking discovery involving the late Pastor Jimmy Swaggart, who passed away recently at the age of 90.

During a private family gathering at the ministry compound, Donnie Swaggart, Jimmy’s only son, reportedly broke down in tears after being shown documents revealing a previously unknown fortune quietly tucked away by his father — not in gold or real estate, but in a series of anonymous charitable trusts, handwritten letters, and ministry donations dating back decades.

💬 “This wasn’t about wealth,” a family friend said. “It was about legacy. Quietly funding missions, supporting widows, rebuilding churches — all without anyone knowing it was him.”

The files included notes Jimmy wrote to God, records of private gifts to struggling pastors, and even envelopes of cash left behind with instructions to be delivered to specific families in need.

Witnesses say Donnie, overwhelmed, whispered through tears:

💬 “He never stopped giving… not even when the world wasn’t watching.”

The discovery has reignited a powerful wave of emotion across the global faith community — a reminder that behind the public sermons and gospel songs was a man quietly committed to serving others with grace, humility, and generosity.

This story is still unfolding.

It happened quietly, behind closed doors, just days after the world said goodbye to Pastor…

World Optometry Day 2023

Who is an Optometrist?

Optometrists are eye care doctors( Doctor of Optometry, ODs) who examine, diagnose treat and/manage eye disease conditions.
In Nigeria, they train for six(6) years in the university, graduate, take a licencing examination, do internship for one(1) year, go on one year national youth service(NYSC) and get fully licenced.

ODs like MDs are CLINICIANS. In Nigeria, they have no surgical privileges but some ODs outside Nigeria do.

Optometrists are not Dispensing Opticians(Opticians), as called erroneously by some but they work together with opticians to get your spectacles in order.

The bulk of eye and vision care rests on the shoulders of OPTOMETRISTS
(surgical cases form just a small percentage of eye care needs). So Optometrists serve a greater proportion of the population. (Medical and/or Eye care Outreaches testify to this anytime anywhere).

Optometrists impact the lives of their patients in many ways:

- they make you see well at near and far at any age and for different occupations.

- they are in most cases, the first to diagnose your diabetes.

-they may be the first to observe brain tumor signs that lead to the diagnosis.

-they are in most cases the first to alert you of the development of cataract, monitor and refer you for surgery. They thereafter, co-manage the post cataract eye to restore vision to acceptable levels.

- they work with teachers to help a poor performing school child to restore good vision for good academic performance.

- they correct refractive errors thereby helping a refractive error-induced antisocial behaviour in a child to be restored to positive social interaction. This helps restore dignity and self-esteem.

- Optometrists can help a stroke patient recover single binocular vision instead of double vision.

- Optometrusts are involved in research to find causes and determinants of eye disease and profer solutions.

- they manage those with subnormal vision to help them remain visually functional.

- ODs are at the forefront of sports vision for both able and disabled athletes and sportsmen.

- ODs communicate and counsel patients to prioritize, preserve, protect vision as well as prevent vision loss.

Optometry has advanced to include specialty areas:
-Paediatric Optometry
-Public Health Optometry
-Primary Care Optometry
-Low Vision and Rehabilitative Optometry
-Ocular Health Optometry
- Cornea and Contact Lens Optometry
Please appreciate the enormous work Optometrists do. Ignorance of who Optometrists are has created some practice limitations by some policy makers. As we celebrate World Optometry Day today, help increase Optometrists' impact by advocating for and supporting policies that enable Optometrists practice to their full potential. Government should create an enabling work environment and policy thrust for Optometrists in Nigeria. This is particularly important in State Governments.

I join the World to celebrate Optometrists. Happy World Optometry Day 2023
