ABU CILS commended for sustaining intellectual discourse on Islamic affairs

The Centre for Islamic Legal Studies (CILS), Ahmadu Bello University, has been commended for maintaining the intellectual discourse on topical issues that generally affect Islam.

The Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, made the commendation at the 3rd National Annual Symposium on the Life and Teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW) 2025.

Prof Ahmed, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof Bello Sabo, said CILS must be praised for keeping the tradition for which it was known.

The symposium, 'Sharia Perspective on Peace and Security: Lessons from the Life and Teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW)', was organised in Zaria by the centre on 28th December, 2025.

He recalled that CILS barely two months ago organised a conference for judges and khadis for which legal experts from both the judiciary and academia were invited to present papers on topical issues such as cripto currency, Islamic business transaction, and the role of the judiciary.

"It must be acknowledged that this time around the centre is organising another one on peace and security reflecting on the life and teachings of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW)", he said.

The Vice-Chancellor described the symposium's theme as "insightful and topical", given the current security challenges facing the country and the need to address them once and for all.

Prof Ahmed acknowledged with profound appreciation the commitment and special interest that His Highness, Malam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, CFR, the Emir of Zazzau, continued to show interest in anything that affected education and enlightenment organised by Ahmadu Bello University.

He also recalled that the Emir came personally to attend the last ABU Alumni Association Annual Lecture despite his other tight engagements.

While praying for successful deliberations, the Vice-Chancellor requested that a copy of the communique after the symposium should be made available to the university management for study and necessary action.

The Director, Centre for Islamic Legal Studies (CILS), Dr Sa'ad Musa Abubakar, gave an address of welcome, while a keynote address was presented by Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdulrahman Idris, who is the Zaria Area Command, Nigeria Police.

His Highness, Malam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, CFR, the Emir of Zazzau, also made a short remark at the occasion.

A total of three papers were presented by eminent scholars, namely Prof Ahmed Bello Dogarawa, Sheikh Abubakar Abdussalam, and Prof Umar Sani Fagge.

My vision for ABU Postgraduate College, by Provost.

The Provost, Postgraduate College, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Oluyinka O Okubanjo, says his vision is to transform the college into a globally competitive centre of excellence.

Prof Okubanjo told PRC Beacon in an interview that the vision aimed to position ABU as a leading research institution in Africa.

PRC Beacon is a new publication by Postgraduate Representative Council that seeks to "illuminate the voices, ideas, and research of the brilliant minds" within ABU postgraduate community.

The Provost was Deputy Dean of ABU School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS) before it was now upgraded to Postgraduate College.

Okubanjo, a Professor of Veterinary Parasitology, was of the belief the strength of any university depended largely on its postgraduate system.

He said addressing funding issues, supervision delays, and administrative bottlenecks to strengthen the system was both an academic and institutional necessity.

According to him, his focus would remain on academic excellence by ensuring curriculum review, supervisor training, and strict adherence to quality standards.

He said the focus would also be on research visibility through encouraging high-impact publications, research clinics, and a postgraduate research fund.

His job would equally be focused on digital transformation and partnerships to strengthen collaborations with global institutions, industry, and research agencies, he further said.

Prof Okubanjo explained that he would give priority to student support by establishing welfare desks, mentorship networks, and expanding scholarships.

"Also, the college is improving infrastructure, laboratories, and access to digital resources; and with institutional support, we aim to reposition ABU as a leading postgraduate and research institution", he also said.

He explained that through the use of technology and data-driven management to improve efficiency the postgraduate college was gradually embracing digital tools for admissions, results processing, and correspondence.

This, according to him, reduced delays and gave time for strategic engagement with policy and academic development.

The provost stressed that his motivation came from a deep sense of responsibility, empathy, and commitment to the ideals of Ahmadu Bello University.

Prof Okubanjo urged students to stay focused, uphold integrity, and seek mentorship as the postgraduate journey required discipline and perseverance.

The provost appreciated all staff of the college for their dedication and urged them for continued professionalism, empathy, and transparency.

Why we introduced crop residues milling - NAPRI

The National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI), Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, says it introduced the milling of crop residues to complement the dry season feed shortages of ruminants and pseudo-ruminants.

Last year's crushing of crop residues after the 2024 rainy season yielded positive results as the institute produced a total of 748 bags (100kg-jumbo sacks) of the crop residues.

NAPRI Deputy Director, Dr Muhammad Sa'id Tanko, disclosed this while inspecting this year's crop residues crushing exercise on the institute farms at Shika.

Over 70 workers are all over the farms for the grinding of crop residues, an agricultural activity which the institute started on 23rd December, 2025.

"Following 2024 rainy season, the institute utilized sufficient quantity of the crop residues to complement the dry season feed shortages of ruminants which yielded positive response.

"Similarly, after the 2025 rainy season, NAPRI, against all odds, started on 23rd December, 2025, on large-scale evacuation, gathering, and crushing of crop residues for proper and optimal utilisation", he said.

The target for this season, according to him, was to multiply in many folds the last year's crop residues, for example, 3,500 bags against the 2026 dry season supplementation.

He further explained that the last year's crushed crop residues were stored and efficiently utilized to supplement the 2025 dry season feeding of the institute's sheep, goats, and cattle.

Crop residues are post-harvest roughages or materials left after the removal of the primary feed (cereals and legumes grains/seeds) from crop plants.

The residues constitute important feed for ruminants during dry season of every year.

They include the stover of sorghum, maize, and millet, rice straws, soya beans husks, and groundnut haums used to complement the dry season feed shortages of the conventional feed.

According to the Deputy Director, the quality of the crop residues produced by the institute was being improved by fortifying with moisture, qualitative poultry droppings and molasses.

The Deputy Director thanked the workers, who were being overseen by Dalhatu Mohammed, a Principal Technical Officer, and Shehu Umar Shagi, a security head, for the commendable job.

Dalhatu Mohammed, who said the crop residues crushing would be rounded off in one week, appreciated the NAPRI management for all the support given to them to accomplish the task.

NAPRI targets 30,000 bales of hay this season as pasture harvest still ongoing

The National Animal Protection Research Institute (NAPRI) is set to produce at least 30,000 bales of hay this season as the pasture harvest is still ongoing at the institute.

The pasture harvest, which commenced on 2nd December, 2025, is expected to be concluded by the end of January next year.

Pasture production is part of the national mandate of NAPRI as an animal research institute.

The ongoing pasture harvest at the institute is largely for digitaria and bracharia species.

NAPRI's Head of Forage Production Unit, Mohammed Hamisu Abdul, who was met on the farm inspecting the production of the animal feeds, said the harvest was going on smoothly.

"As you can see, we are into hay production now. We have, so far, produced more than 7,000 bales of digitaria hay for animal feeds which we have conserved in the stores of the institute", he said.

Abdul attributed the success recorded this season to the timely provision of enough fertilizer and the total overhaul of the institute's tractors by NAPRI management.

He also linked the remarkable achievement to the cooperation of the coworkers who all came out for the work during the festive period.

Mohammed Hamisu Abdul explained that the target was to produce at least 30,000 bales of hay before the end of next year's (2026) January.

He expressed optimism that the unit could double the feat next year if they would be supplied with six new tractors with implements by NAPRI management.

The head of hay production unit, therefore, appreciated the NAPRI management for the unwavering support to achieve the set target.

Abdul equally commended all staff of the three sections under the unit for their determination and hard work.

ABU, AMA-MED plan collaboration on drug production, commercialisation of research outputs

Ahmadu Bello University and AMA Pharmaceutical Company have signified intentions to build strong partnership on drug development and commercialization of research outputs.

AMA-MED is the largest pharmaceutical company in the North based in Kaduna that produces high quality lifesaving intravenous fluids (IV Fluid).

The company has since inception in 2019 been pioneering advancements in medical manufacturing.

With last year's signing of the Executive Order by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on raw materials for pharmaceuticals production, the partnership by both organizations will help increase local production of healthcare products and reduce production costs.

The intention for the partnership between the two organizations was when the Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Prof Adamu Ahmed, first visited the pharmaceutical firm in Kaduna for SIWES placement for students of the institution.

The Vice-Chancellor was impressed with the state-of-art medical manufacturing facility with advanced AFFS technology.

Prof Ahmed was also amazed at the continuing innovations that underscores the company's growth and commitment.

After going round the pharmaceutical firm, they discussed the strong need for collaboration on drug production in various aspects of pharmaceutical development.

They also looked at the possibility of promoting the commercialization of research outputs from the institution's Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and other related departments.

It was envisaged that the collaboration would help bridge the gap between the academia and the industry.

The return visit to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria recently by the Founder of AMA Pharmaceutical Company, Alhaji Abdullahi Musa, further consolidated the process for the collaboration.

The Vice-Chancellor expressed confidence that the collaboration between ABU and AMA-MED would eventually enhance drug manufacturers' competitiveness.

What the university is presently doing under the leadership of Prof Adamu Ahmed is to build collaboration with the industry for commercialization of research outputs.

The Vice-Chancellor's recent visit to the University of Glasgow and University of Salford in the United Kingdom opened up new opportunities for research collaborations and linkages with the industry.

Zamfara govt offers to renovate ABU Vice-Chancellor's lodge, sickbay

Zamfara State Government has offered to renovate the dilapidated Vice-Chancellor's Lodge and Sickbay at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

Shamsuddeen Ibrahim, Special Assistant on Domestic Affairs to His Excellency, Dr Dauda Lawal, the Executive Governor, Zamfara State, disclosed this when he visited the university to inspect the lodge and medical facility for assessment.

Ibrahim was taken round the two places today (Thursday, 25th December, 2025) by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adamu Ahmed.

The Vice-Chancellor was accompanied by the Director, Physical Planning and Municipal Services, Arc. Mukhtar H Mohammed; and the Provost, Postgraduate College, Prof Olayinka Okubanjo.

The visit to the university by Governor Dauda Lawal's aide was in preparation for the taking over of the sites for the rehabilitation.

The Governor's Special Assistant was first at the Vice-Chancellor's Lodge at Site I, Area 'A', Main Campus, Samaru, Zaria, where he was taken round all parts of the lodge.

The Vice-Chancellor and members of his team later took the government official to the University Sickbay, where they were received by the Deputy Director, University Health Services (UHS), Dr Alex Otu.

Dr Otu conducted them round all sections of the sickbay, explaining in details the state of the dilapidated university medical facility.

Some of the sections inspected include the administrative block, theatre room, OPD, antenatal unit, family planning unit, emergency room, ultrasound room, and dental section.

Dr Alex Otu, who expressed excitement for the plan to rehabilitate the sickbay, said the medical facility needed to be given all the attention it deserved.

Otu also explained that outsiders kept on coming to the hospital because of the "good services we have continued to offer".

He described the dental section of the hospital as one of the busiest units because of high volume of dental patients which necessitated a strong collaboration with Ahmadu University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH).

Otu also said the NHIS unit of the facility was too small as the ABU sickbay had the highest number of clients in Nigeria.

Speaking after going round the lodge and the medical facility, the Special Assistant to Zamfara State Governor on Domestic Affairs, Shamsuddeen Ibrahim, expressed concern over the total dilapidation of the places visited.

Ibrahim also said a technical team would be deployed to the sites early in January, 2026 to further assess and take over the places for the rehabilitation works.

It would be recalled that His Excellency, Dr Dauda Lawal, pledged his government's willingness to intervene in rehabilitating some of the institution's infrastructure facilities.

This was when members of the university management called on him in Gusau, Zamfara State capital, recently.
