The man behind a name of Alzheimer disease was Alois, born 14/06/1864, a German psychiatrist and neuropathologist, who made a seminal contribution to the field of neurodegenerative disorders.
In 1906, following five years of clinical observation of a patient named Auguste Deter—who exhibited unusual behavioral symptoms, including profound short-term memory loss—Dr. Alzheimer conducted a post-mortem examination of her brain. Utilizing the then-novel Bielschowsky silver staining technique, he identified the presence of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles.
Later in his career, Alzheimer relocated to Breslau (now Wrocław, Poland), where he was appointed as a professor at the local university University of Wroclaw. He passed away there in 1915.
Interestingly, .weglarz.tomczak CEO of NatInLab, was born in Wrocław 70 years after Alzheimer’s death. Perhaps, carrying forward the legacy he began, she may one day contribute to the development of a safe and effective therapy for the disease he first characterized.
