The Rwenzori Health Swim Challenge

The Rwenzori Health Swim Challenge I'm training to qualify for the 2023 FINA World Masters Championships.

I aim to set Personal Best (PB) times on the way, to raise funds for health projects my amazing sis, Rita Miller, is running helping people in the Rwenzori region of Uganda .

Now a month back after swimming at the World Aquatics Masters Swimming Championship, the journey continues...

I will continue fundraising for my awesome sis, Rita Miller, and her health projects in The Rwenzori region of Uganda (https://ritafrica.wordpress.com)

My next challenge is to swim all time personal bests (PBs) and participate at next year's European Masters. A rough guideline is that a swimmer loses 1" per additional year of life. I am going to try and prove this wrong 🤞

So far I've raised over EUR 1200, and really appreciate and grateful to those who have donated; but my target is EUR 5000. So, some way to go yet; but confident I will raise this:

I will continue to post blogs on my journey on my website - and here, of course.

The Rwenzori Health Swim Challenge
Last training session with the Masters DAW and a dryland session with my PT Ata before heading off to Fukuoka on August 3 (read all about it here: www. journeytokyushu.com ). Still three more sessions in the pool - all taper and probably one to two easy drylands.

Going to the World Masters Championships seems unreal. My challenge was to swim qualifying times, of which I have swum four, in order to raise funds for my sister’s projects in Uganda (https://ritafrica.wordpress.com). I’ve raised over 1000 euros so far; but still a long way off from my target. A big thank you to all who donated.

Taking part in a major championship at my tender age is like the icing on the cake. It has been challenging at times, with sharper QTs announced, missing training through work and injury and the motivation to keep going after these setbacks. But hey, it’s a challenge - so living up to expectations 😉😊

I will be posting updates regularly over the next days, on some FB sites as well as my own webpage. So if you want to continue following my journey, you can do so. Thanks again for all your support! ❤️❤️

A date with The Black Widow at the Last Chance Saloon:

After the disappointing times realized at the Open Dutch Masters Long Course Swimming Championships in May, I had two more opportunities to try to get qualifying times for the World Masters at the Regionals. The deadline for submitting qualifying times for the World Masters in Kyushu was June 28th. The first regional competition was going to be in two weeks after the Open Dutch Masters in Lelystad and the other on June 4th in Heerenveen. For the competition in Lelystad I was going to swim the 50m ‘Fly, 50m Backstroke and the 200m Individual Medley. For the one in Heerenveen, the 100m Freestyle and the 400m Individual Medley (aka The Black Widow). For both Regionals there was a possibility to swim one qualifying time in each; but the most probable one was the 100m Freestyle as I was just 0.82” outside the QT for the World Masters.

The Rwenzori Health Swim Challenge: Countdown to the Open Dutch Masters Long Course Swimming Championships.
In just two days I will start with the 50m Backstroke at the amazing new(ish) Amerena in Amersfoort. After being out of the pool for nearly 3 weeks with a back injury, the last two weeks have been a mix of tough swim sets, dryland training, yoga and healthy eating. Monday was my last taper training and Tuesday my last dryland. Tomorrow an easy swim in the pool to stay in the swim and relax. Then on Friday morning drive to the Amerena. Two starts in the afternoon: the 50m Backstroke and the 200m IM 😬💪
I will be posting daily (I hope) updates here and also on my page and my Blog pages at www.journeytokyushu.com
The goal for this weekend is to get at least one more qualifying time for the World Masters and to see some improvement in the times. Watch this space.

ONMK SC 2023: My next milestone after the Open Masters in Luxembourg last October, was the ONMK Korte Baan 2023 or, in plain language, the Open Netherlands Masters Swimming Championships- short course. It presented an opportunity to set a new baseline, swim faster times than those achieved in Luxembourg and, hopefully, try to achieve at least one qualifying time. This open championship was held over four days from 16-19 February 2023 at the Sport Stad swimming pool in Heerenveen. The turnout was one of the biggest: 113 clubs from 9 countries with 837 swimmers and over 3000 starts. Needless to say, the 25m pool was heaving on all four days. I had two starts on Day 2, two on Day 3 and one on Day 4. Read all about the event - and my progress - here:

Luxembourg: The first challenge. This was the first big challenge for me as I had not competed at this level for over three years, and only after eight weeks back in training. Slow times; but five medals 🥇🥈🥈🥈🥈and three qualifying times for Kyushu.
