The brilliant philosophy of Chinese Medicine is the theory of the Five Elements. They are interconnected and explain how our body functions as a whole.
They help us understand how our organs work, what needs to be corrected at a given moment, and what happens during different periods of the year.
The theory of the Five Elements describes Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water as the fundamental elements of the material world. In Chinese Medicine, these elements help us understand the patient and their personality. They also help us determine the best and most effective treatment plan.
If you are a “Wood personality,” you may be athletic, energetic, and adventurous. The body structure of a Wood personality is usually muscular. Wood types tend toward anxiety and anger. They may suffer from orthopedic problems, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, migraines, or attention deficit syndrome.

To choose the correct treatment, we must always observe what is happening with these elements and where their connection has “broken.”
All Elements are connected. Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth, Earth creates Metal, Metal holds Water, and Water nourishes Wood. Wood roots into Earth, Earth dams Water, Water extinguishes Fire, Fire melts Metal, and Metal cuts Wood. Each element controls and is controlled by another. The system is interconnected, dynamic, and constantly seeking balance. One element may be more dominant in us than the others. This is where we are strongest — but also most vulnerable.
