Addiction is still treated as a crime in many parts of Europe. In Romania, drug use is criminalised, and stigma runs deep. But behind the silence, change is happening.

On September 24, we’re hosting a webinar that brings together professionals working in psychiatry, probation, psychotherapy, and peer support to talk about what’s working in Romania—and what needs to change.

This is part of the EUCOMS “Learning from Each Other” series, and it’s organised in collaboration with NoAddict Clinic Iași, ALIAT Clinic Suceava, Psychiatric Hospital Siret, and GGZ Noord-Holland-Noord (Netherlands).

We’ll hear about:

Prevention strategies for teenagers
Therapeutic work with addicted offenders
Post-treatment recovery support
Romania’s first national addiction medicine training program for psychiatrists
And powerful reflections from a peer expert with lived experience

Ovidiu Alexinschi, Anca Nicoara, Diana-Maria Gheletiuc Gabriela Jucan Tibi Rotaru Marieke van de Noort

If you care about mental health, justice reform, or simply want to understand addiction care from a community-based, human rights perspective—this is a conversation you’ll want to be part of.

🧠 Bridging Mental Health Gaps in Europe: The Need for Inclusive Solutions

Healthcare disparities across the EU are widening, making universal and equitable access to mental health services increasingly difficult.

People in vulnerable situations—financially disadvantaged individuals, migrants, and minorities—face persistent barriers, including:
⚖️Legal and geographic obstacles limiting service availability
🗣️Social stigma and low mental health literacy preventing access
📊 Data gaps hindering effective policy-making and evaluation
💰 Limited cost-effectiveness assessments that overlook equity considerations

A holistic, multi-dimensional, and community-centered approach is essential to break down these barriers. This means co-designed services, improved data collection, and stronger evaluation mechanisms to ensure real impact.

🔹 EQUICARES is tackling these challenges by developing innovative solutions that enhance access to mental health care for vulnerable groups. Through research, community engagement, and policy development, we are identifying gaps, testing new approaches, and promoting inclusivity.

It’s time to rethink mental health services—because access should not be a privilege.
