A keen yogi since his Beatles days, McCartney has described how he regularly practises yoga with a group of friends — including the actor Alec Baldwin — whom he calls “the yoga boys”. We all know yoga is good for posture and flexibility, but last year a team from Harvard and other universities confirmed in the Annals of Internal Medicine that its effects can improve several aspects of health that are predictors of longevity, including leg strength and walking speed. In their review of 33 studies involving people over the age of 65, the authors described how yoga also helped to enhance hand grip strength, balance, leg strength and endurance.

Studies have shown that regular yoga exercises benefit athletes. Yoga helps develop flexibility, balance, mobility, endurance, strengthens the muscles of the torso and muscles in general. Doing yoga, athletes can prevent injuries, and recover faster after exhausting workouts, as well as improve their athletic performance.

I knew that LeBron James hit the mat (and could do a Headstand), but had no idea to what extent. The Miami Herald reports that James credits his remarkable stamina to yoga!

James has been logging over 43-minutes per game during the playoffs and is arguably the most well-conditioned professional basketball player in the world.

When asked about his off-season yoga practice and how it's helped his stamina, James replied:

“Does it work for everybody? I don’t know. I’m not a guru about how to be in the best condition — don’t let me sit here and tell you that. But it works for me.”

LeBron's yoga practice has even rubbed off on Miami Heat coach, Erik Spoesltra. Spoelstra hits the mat during the season to 'stay in shape and relieve stress.'

Just as children need sleep in order to grow, we need deep rest in order to renew! With the internal focus on the breath combined with the release in the body our minds begin to quieten, which is what yoga is all about.

Так же, как детям нужен сон, чтобы расти, нам необходим глубокий отдых, чтобы полностью восстановиться. Концентрируя внимание на дыхании, наше тело освобождается от скованности, и это приводит наш ум в спокойное состояние, а это как раз то, в чем состоит суть йоги.
