What is Cranial Sacral Therapy?
The treatment stems from an osteopathic (manual-medical) method, based on a rhythm, like heart or breath rhythm can be felt throughout the body. The rhythm called the craniosacral pulse and has a speed of 6 to 12 times per minute at which cerebrospinal fluid (brain fluid) is pumped around the brain and spinal cord, between the cranium and the sacrum (sacrum). Hence the name Cranio-Sacral Therapy - CST. Cranio-Sacral therapy is a very gentle, but thorough manual therapy, which works with the body's own pulse, with the aim to influence the body to heal itself.
The Cranio-sacral pulse is also called "breath of life" because it can be seen as an expression of a person's vitality, and changes in this rhythm can cause changes in both body and soul. With the help of the therapist's gentle touch, the body can often self-correct imbalances that may occur after stroke or shock, flu, shock and other stresses. Treatment form that was discovered by American physician William Sutherland, a century ago, has since been developed worldwide. Cranio-Sacral Therapy practiced today by doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and alternative practitioners, but also used by relatives of accident victims or the parents of a disabled child.
How does the treatment work?
One treatment lasts about an hour, where the client lies relaxed on a couch while the therapist with a gentle touch loosens up the tension and blockages, especially around the head, spine and pelvis. The client often experience a deep relaxation, an almost meditative sleep. In response to treatment, many clients following a cleansing of the body, transient fatigue and the like.
These reactions subside quickly and are only signs that the body begins to release its problems. There may be a processing of unconscious trauma saved if the body is ready to drop them.
