Music Freedom Day (3 March), founded by Freemuse in 2007, honours musicians who have been censored, harassed, imprisoned or killed for their work, and reminds us of a simple truth: musical expression is a human right.
In many countries, a lyric that criticises power can lead to prosecution, intimidation or violence, and artists who join peaceful protests are especially likely to be targeted for their public profile and reach.
In the coming days, Freemuse will share stories of artists under pressure worldwide, including cases from Cuba, Russia, Kenya, China and Iran. Follow along and stand for artistic freedom.
